TR killed in 1912

WI the assasination attempt on Theodore Roosevelt on October 14 1912 had been successful?

What would be the effect on the 1912 election? I'd imagine the Progressive Party would collapse after Teddy's death so would this mean more votes for Taft?

Any other possible consequences?

Taft probably would have won, but if only 1/3rd of TR's voters went to Wilson, he would have carried the popular vote, so its not certain.

So a Taft presidency could result? Interesting...

What effect might this have on WWI?

HOLY CRAP! Youre STILL alive!?!?? Meh, Teddy must be smashing his way through his grave right now to kik ur ass.:p

That being said, WWI would depend on if Taft was a German sympthizer or not.

T.R's running mate Governor Hiram Johnson automatically becomes the Progressive party presidential candidate. The Progressive Party will not completely collapse at this short notice and should get at 10% of the popular vote and carrry at least one state(California). Taft will get more votes but so will Wilson, and the ultimate outcome is that Wilson still wins the presidency.

I'd forgotten about that, although I don't know if Hiram Johnson would necessarily become the Presidential nominee; that would be up to the rules of the Progressive Party. But yeah, they'd probably still get enough votes to elect Wilson, unfortunately.

American Hero

TR becomes president because of assasination dies by assasination = TR as an American hero more so than he already was

Also there is a good chance progressive party will survive TR because of the sympathy they will follow such an event

Is it possible that the reaction would be a huge swing to progressives making Hiram JOhnson President?

If that happens:

1) Would US neutrality in WW1 be more neutral?

2) Would it make women's suffrage happen a bit earlier?

3) How Progressive was Johnson on race?

4) Would the 'Republican Party' survive or would there be a radical reworking fo the US party system

Another thing, Within days after becoming the Progeressive Presidential candidate Hiram Johnson picks Senator Bob LaFollette of Wisconsin as his running mate.
