Well, seeing all the threads about the greatest British, Australian, or Canadian prime minister, I had to wonder to myself: Who was the greatest American prime minister?
My top five are:
George Washington (Federalist-1789-1802)
Founder of the country, I mean without him we'd be like France or one of those African nations with a *gasp* president or something.
Teddy Roosevelt (Republican-1901-1917)
I don't care what the Howard Zinn people say about the American empire, the man protected American interests when we needed it the most as well as the National Health Insurance program, the Women's Voting Rights Act. or the beginnings of basic black civil rights. Without him, who would the Europe look to for guidance for their insurance programs.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat-1930-1945)
Great Depression, Social Security, WWII what else can I say?
Eleanor Roosevelt (Democrat-1954-1966)
She presided over one of the largest periods of growth in American history and used our power in the Cold War carefully after the Korea fiasco. Role model for women all over and the Negro Voting Rights Act and other civil rights legislation - states and their Premiers denying blacks to vote, segregation, and unequal schooling and all.
OoC: Assume that as PM she didn't get hit by a car. It butterflied away so to speak.
Newt Gingrich (Republican-1995-2006)
Who else would provide post-Cold War leadership? Reformed NIH and other programs. Who else could guide America after 9/11, fight against Al-Qaeda, and lead the war in Afghanistan?
Oh and follow my format (Name, party, and years as PM for those who don't know American politics)
