Tony Blair loses 2005 election

Suppose the reaction to Tony Blair's decision to participate in the Iraq war was more severe and voters kicked him and the Labour Party out...

What effect would this have on Iraq, terrorism and other global issues?

I'm sad to say that it's nearly impossible, and definitely is if it's over Iraq. The only major anti-war party, the Lib Dems, didn't make the expected gains. The Tories were weaker in terms of popular support then compared to now (trust me, I spent a lot of time campaigning for them in that election!)

POD: MI5 man confesses to killing Dr Kelly to cover up the false threat of WMD's becoming known. Blair is directly implicated and forced to resign leaving Gordon Brown in charge

2005 would be Michael Howard vs Gordon Brown. Brown lacks the charisma of Blair and Howard's Tories get a small majority.

Certainly the UK would have less crime since Howard was a very successful Home Secretary. Certainly they could not be worse than Labour, whose motto "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" should surely dictate that they disband their own party. The EU constitution would have been thrown out. There would be less Public sector workers.

The big question is the credit crunch. IIRC the Tories under Howard were not the touchy-feely ecofreaks created by call me Dave who wanted to match Labour spending.

As the 'Nasty Party' they would have undone a lot of the madness of Brown, but come 2008 we would still be hit and Labour would be fully blaming the policies that might give us a fighting chance...

Hmmm...
Given that the SNP and PC did make gains in 2005, and, given that a Labour defeat would give them more power, would that increase autonomy for Scotland and Wales? (Sinn Fein also gained, but their gains were balanced out by DUP gains...)

(I'm not a UK resident so feel free to correct me for being wrong...)
