Today: We have to get to the Moon as soon as possible.

CNN BREAKING NEWS!!!!

S.E.T.I. was greeted this morning with the sound of what appears to be a signal of some kind, it has been heard coming from Frau Mauro crater.

Wow, that's incredible! Just looked it up on Google News. I can't believe its happening in my lifetime!

Still, I expect at least a year to put together a mission to the Moon. Two or three years, more likely, with the condition of NASA right now. Maybe we could just launch a probe in the interim period.

EDIT: This just in! NASA just rejected the European Union's proposal for an international mission. The chief of staff reported it would take longer to collaborate than for everyone to go at it with their own funds and men. Hm. I don't know about that. It seems like the ethical thing to do would to put a crew up there representing everyone on Earth, though I know that'd be difficult.

Well, wait just a second. We need confirmation that it's not just an errant satellite signal. The moon isn't up yet in Puerto Rico or at the VLA; DSN Madrid and Jodrell Bank are retargeting now. JAXA is working out a scan of the region with Kayuga; CNSA has yet to comment...

As for future plans, the ESA/NASA plan seems to involve sending LRO as soon as possible (no LCROSS!), and pooling resources on a crewed landing. Rumors I've heard indicate a two-stage trans-lunar stage launched on two Ariane V's, a two-person lander launched on a Delta IV heavy, and a crew capsule brought up by a Shuttle. Launch date is targeted for ~4 months from now...

This just in: The Russian and Chinese will cooperate on a parallel/backup mission, and are coordinating with NASA/ESA project.

Simon ;)

<sigh>

You are assuming the first mission is a manned mission.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

A series of unmanned missions with the first in 4 months. Mostly US with some EU involvement.

Did anyone catch the news bit about NASA refusing ESA collaboration? Those initial plans could be tossed out of the window now.

OOC: Come on guys, read my posts and don't ruin the DBWI...

I think it is probably a hoax, Russia has been trying for several years to get the US the support the Russian Space Plane.
Notice how quick the Russians were to propose using their plane for the expedition.

Watch out, it might be the micro wave owen acting up. or more likely, somebody that sent a transmitter to the Moon.

My guess is its coming form the Moonbase that Clive Cussler revealed in Cyclops.

Cyclops is an action-adventure novel by Clive Cussler. This is the 8th book featuring the author’s primary protagonist, Dirk Pitt. A wealthy American financier disappears on a treasure hunt in an antique blimp. From Cuban waters, the blimp drifts toward Florida with a crew of dead men -- Soviet cosmonauts. DIRK PITT discovers a shocking scheme: a covert group of U.S. industrialists has put a colony on the moon, a secret base they will defend at any cost. Threatened in space, the Russians are about to strike a savage blow in Cuba -- and only DIRK PITT can stop them. From a Cuban torture chamber to the cold ocean depths, Pitt is racing to defuse an international conspiracy that threatens to shatter the earth!

Probably should label it a DBWI if you want it treated as one.

Original poster said nothing about a DBWI.

This topic belongs in the Future History category, because the event (POD) has not happened yet and is if it happened tomorrow, no known laws of science would be violated.
