TLIAPOD: The Prairie Fields

Convo. Between President Truman and Senator Alben Barkley, from Kentucky, in the Oval Office (August 1st, 1947).

"Goddammit, he's gonna run."

"Looks that way, Mr President. There ain't much reason other to form that committee."

"He could get the nomination, and that'd just send us all down to hell."

"What about Pepper, then?"

"He might as well call himself Wallace, we need someone strong enough on Communism if we want to just stay alive."

"Have you thought about Lane?"

"Governor Lane... well, no, I haven't... look into him more, maybe he's worth something."

Speech by Robert A. Taft, Senator from Ohio, in Tacoma (August 2nd, 1947).

Fellow Republicans,

Thank you for this invitation to speak before you today. I'll be brief, so that more interesting and compelling guests may speak.

The last fourteen years have seen the true effects of liberal Democratic administration: programs promising security, housing, employment have drained our federal expenditures, the buying power of our dollar, and did not raise our standards of living.

In the aftermath of the tragic World War we have undergone, rather than bringing our troops home, we have instead entangled ourselves in the alliances which George Washington warned us of.

Last year, the people of this country have finally shown their anger and voted out the Democrats from Congress. Surely, they will vote out the Democrats from the White House next year. And if you're willing, then I'll lead us to it.
