TLIAD Dr Who: The ITV Alternative 1968 to 1995

1967-1968 Jeremy Childs

The First Doctor was a member of a secret Gallifreyan Anti Terrorist Group called TOD (Temporal Operations Directorate) who battle the Daleks throughout the series. At the same time the Doctor in his human guise of Doctor John Smith is romancing 18th Century gentlewoman Alice Hargreaves (Susan George).

The second series sees the Doctor preparing to renounce his alien heritage and settle with Alice in 18th century London. But the daleks follow the doctor, kill Alice and seriously damage the TARDIS causing it to crash through time and leading to the Doctor's first regeneration...

Although both series were made by Rediffusion, Thames Television broadcasted the second series

1970-1973 Michael MacKenzie

The second doctor and the TARDIS materialise in modern day London where they attract the attention of runaway Kate Preston (Judy Loe). This Doctor is far more cynical and bitter then his predecessor. His growing attachment to Kate helps him heal the scars of his past and he becomes a dashing playboy style character.

This version also seen the introduction of a new enemy. The Hydrax. A liquid based parasitic lifeform who can take human form. The Doctor and Kate (and later Sam Harper played by Pamela Stephenson) battle the Hydrax and various other enemies. The Doctor regenerates saving the Earth from a Hydrax invasion force...

1974-1978 Patrick Stewart

The third and perhaps the most loved Doctor. He is more of an Edwardian swashbuckler. Allying himself with UNIT (who we encounter during the second doctor's reign) and Sam, This doctor focuses mainly on earth based threats. He regenerates foiling a Dalek plot to destroy the Earth's core...

1978-1981 John Nettles

The 4th Doctor is the most alien. His "deaths" while saving the Earth have made him less enamoured of his adopted world. He spends much of his tenure looking through space and time for any remnants of Gallifrey. Sam leaves him early on and he has no companions throughout his time.

He believes he has found his home when he receives a signal from Morbius a timelord exiled on the planet Praxis. But Morbius seeks to destroy the Doctor in revenge for his own exile for attempting to overthrow the High Council.

In the climatic battle, Morbius opens a black hole near Earth to lure the Doctor back. Morbius is sucked in the black hole but the Doctor is seriously injured. As the TARDIS lands on Earth. The doctor regenerates...

1981-1986 Robert Powell

The 5th Doctor harks back to his 3rd self. An adventurer with a strong sense of indignation against injustice. There is no tenure wide enemy. Instead the Doctor along with his companions Harriet Morgan (Angela Bruce) and Nick Callgahan (Mike Berry) encounter foes old and new.

This 5th Doctor regenerates foiling a joint Dalek/Hydrax plan to ignite an anti matter bomb over Earth

1986-1990 Stephen Fry

The 6th Doctor is a true intellectual. Dressed as a modern man but with the style of an regency dandy the 6th Doctor abhors violence and uses reason and intelligence to defeat his enemies.

This is also the most selfless of doctors. He gives his life to save his young companion Lucy Flynn (Patsy Kensit) after she is subjected to a deadly poison administered by Morbius.

1990-1995 Colin Firth

The 7th Doctor is the most cultured. He is a lover of music, literature and art. He perhaps more than his previous selves fights to save the beauty of the universe.

His "humanity" leads to possibly the most heartrending regeneration. He pushes his companion Sally Mills (Daniela Denby Ashe) through a time gate to save her from a Dalek hit squad....

Ae before. When Thames lost their franchise on 1992, Carlton took over the production

1995-2000 Richard E Grant

The 8th Doctor is the darkest of the incarnations. The events that led to his last regeneration have scarred him in such a way that many of the traits that he held dear have been buried under layers of guilt and heartbreak.

We see him as something of a lone gunslinger. Travelling from world to world encountering problems and dealing with them as he has done so many times before but with an air of detachment.

Truth is he is still grieving over the loss of his beloved Alice and over the series becomes more determined to bring her back.

This obsession leads him in the last story of his tenure to use the TARDIS to break through the Blinovitch limitation effect and travel back to 18th century london to save her. This leads to the first meeting between Doctors.

Ultimately Alice is doomed to die...but not at the hands of the Daleks. Instead the damage done to the space-time continnum as a result of the doctors meeting leads to the sequence of events that led to her death is altered where she is knocked out by an explosion.

Both doctors drained by their meeting and battle with the daleks start regenerating.

The final shots of the series show the first doctor regenerate and the 8th starting to do so...

The final episode was a Millennium Special. Jeremy Childs reprised his role as the first doctor. Michael Mackenzie was unavailable so CGI was used in the regeneration

2000-2003 Colin Salmons

The 9th doctor is certainly a smoothie. He dresses like a city businessman and exudes class from every pore. He even acquires a sports car although how this is done is never explained.

Yet under this image is the same dedicated Doctor we know. Teaming with lawyer Mary-Jayne Hamilton (Kim Thomson) This doctor is concerned more with threats from Earth rather than to Earth. Teaming once again with UNIT this time under the command of Brigadier Rachel Anderson (Glynis Barber) The doctor and Mary combat cyber crime. Environmental damage and even terrorism.

This doctor is more reflective of the post millennium anxieties of the world.

The regeneration happens as a result of the Doctor grabbing a nuclear bomb from a terrorist group and driving his car at breakneck speed away from London.

While the connection to the nuclear material is cut the Doctor is unable to stop the explosion.

When UNIT get to him they find the regeneration has started...

This incarnation was the most controversial. Salmons stated his Doctor was a 21st century reality check. Many viewers were put off by the realistic portrayals of terrorism. ITV decided to cut Salmons contract short by one year.

2003-2008 Rory Kinnear

The 10th doctor is certainly the most human and by far the most relaxed. He loves talking to people and tells wonderful stories. We see this incarnation as the most comfortable yet.

His companions are many and change constantly. The only one with any staying power is former pickpocket Dot (Natalie Casey) who grows and changes much during her time with the Doctor.

The final adventure sees the return of Mobius (Christopher Ellison) who fights to the death with the doctor atop Canary Wharf. Mobius falls the his death while the Doctor exhausted regenerates

2008-2015 Sean Bean

The 11th Doctor is certainly a rough and ready character. Where previous incarnations used violence sparingly this Doctor is very handy with his fists and the action is non-stop.

His diplomatic skills are poor to say the least. He tends to say what he thinks and doesn't mind upsetting people as he goes.

This more action based doctor leads to some thrilling set pieces and quite nailbiting stunts. What does the future hold for the doctor...

The longevity of the tenure is due the series being a mixture of stand alone episodes and short series

Went a bit to quick and just didn't have the kind of detail I'd yern for. It was a nice effort, but you could have spaced this out, maybe done a intro graphic, and put in more detail.

I'd suggest looking at TLIAD by other authors, such as meadow, and follow the same model; image, basic info (name/dates), and then a 500 odd word description. You have a lot of good ideas, it really just lacked; if a moment was heartbreaking, then you need to go into more detail. If he were 'the darkest', please go further. That's about it really- perhaps even world build with a snippet of script. The world (or just the TL) is you're oyster, and it's one that, whilst having a way to go in becoming a pearl, has the basic elements there.

Many thanks once again. This was my first TLIAD and I knew it would be rough and ready at best. TBH I tend to prefer long posts.

I'll look at other TLIAD's and glean some tips.

What I will do though is do another ITV Dr Who in long form and maybe do a few political TLIAD's

Thanks again :)

Is anyone else thinking that this sounds better than the original ...

... particularly if its done by ITC/ Lew Grade?

Effects done by Jim Henson and Gerry Anderson ... Biblical mini-series size budgets, Christopher Lee Guest-Staring!
