Total loss.
Following the navies disastrous defeat at the hands of the navy of the United States the Spanish fleet looked at what it had left. They did not have much, only the old battleship Pelayo, two protected cruisers and five destroyers out of what had until recently been a relatively capable fleet.
The size of the navy told another story however, the story was the loss of what was left of the once mighty Spanish colonial Empire to the upstart United States in a series of disastrous and ill planned battles which had served only to turn a bitter defeat into one bathed in the glorious death of thousands of sons, fathers, nephews and cousins at the hands of American machine gun and cavalry.
The public was outraged at the loss, the king was furious. Everybody seemed to be mad at the government. In fact reports had been delivered which spoke of open rebellion in Catalonia and the Basque country which the local army was unable to quell.
Things were little better in Madrid where protesters had rioted for the last two days, forcing the army to deploy troops to protect important government buildings ,things did not look good at all..
