The British TV series ‘Doctor Who’ had cemented itself as a favorite of British viewers. Due to a combination of his failing health and strained relations with a new production team, it was time for actor William Hartnell to move on from the titular role...but who to replace him?
Show producer Innes Lloyd and the writers already had a vague plan in place – to really enhance the concept of ‘regeneration’, the personality of the Doctor would undergo a radical shift. The new actor would have to play a character almost a polar opposite of the frail, grandfatherly and worldly time lord. The call went out for someone to take up the roll of a louder, rowdier and brash Doctor.
The call was soon answered, but not by whom you would expect…
