Divergence: 7 August 1819 - Royalist victory at the Battle of Boyaca.

  • without a loss, the Viceroy does not flee -
  • which makes it that much harder for Bolivar's forces to seize the densely-populated eastern highlands, the gold-mining regions of the Choco, Antioquia, and the Upper Magdelena Valley -
  • which means Bolivar couldn't yet rest and construct an independent republic.
December 1819 - the British Parliament opens debates on whether or not to continue to permit British soldiers to go be slaughtered in wars between Spaniards {reference: 6,000 Britons had joined Bolivar's army}, when they could be used far more handsomely in Canada or India - which would certainly help the East India Company, which was relying more and more on Parliament.

January 1820 - Spanish military units in Spain revolt {both OTL and ATL}

Febuary 1820 - the King of France intervenes in Spanish affairs when it is clear to him that the King of Spain cannot settle it himself.

  • feeling very much like "here we go again," Britain rallies its army to deal with what appears to be a once-more-expansionist France. among those summoned are Erasmus Alvey "Ras" Darwin, a chemist by inclination.
  • Britain orders its soldiers in South American to return home; most obey.
  • Bolivar and other rebel leaders do not forget this betrayal and abandonment.
  • his numbers dropping from desertion and Britain and disease (in OTL and ATL a great many were felled by dysentery and "black vomit"), Bolivar has no choice but to continue to retreat back through the cold highlands, which cuts down further on his llaneros.
  • in the USA, the House of Representatives fails to pass a resolution recognizing the emerging South American republics (failed by a narrow margin)
9 April 1820 - rebel leader San Martin dies of disease.

  • without a clear leader, San Martin's underlings fall into disagreements, and are - certainly by 1821 - defeated.
2 August 1820 - "no choice left. Indios independents." -S.Bolivar.
{reference: in OTL, he wrote, "Is it not useful that the slaves should acquire their rights on the battlefield and that their number should be lessened by a process both necessary and legitimate?" the alternative, he felt, would be the slaves outnumbering everyone else by too large a margin}

November 1820 - Spain spreads a policy throughout its non-European holdings: the policy, minor before Bolivar arose, and major now, is to encourage rural and city priests to encourage ideas of Divine Right to Rule and otherwise tying religion to monarchy. this policy would later be something Spain would regret.

  • on the run, Simon Bolivar and his remaining loyalists flee to Peru, meeting up with recently-turncoated General Pedro Antonio Olaneta in Upper Peru. (some suggest it was Bolivar who convinced him to switch sides)

  • battle wounds turn septic, killing Colonel Carlos Medinaceli and Victory de la Serna.
1821 - the army of Bolivar and Olaneta establish a refuge at Lake Titicaca, from which they carve out what would become an independent nation.

  • irony that it was revolt-prone Upper Peru which became the only nation in South America to gain its independence so early.
meanwhile, in Europe, the flashpan war was winding to a close, Britain victorious. Ras Darwin returned to England with distinction and decorated, and with a Flemish girl at his side.

  • unfortunately, one of Ras' close friends did not survive: John Lizars (who in OTL performed the first oviotomy and wrote 'The Use And Abuse Of Tobacco')
  • Ras kept a close eye on his younger brother Charles when he (Ras) returned to attending the Shrewsbury Anglican Church, now with wife in tow. Ras planned for Charles to follow him into the army if the boy did not want to join their father in medicine.
in the same year, the region of Bahia in Brazil experienced another revolt. {in OTL, they happened there most of all - when they happened at all}. Bolivar's letters suggesting alliance between his nation and Bahia are rejected with great force and vhelmence.

8 January 1823 - birth of Alfred Russel Wallace in Wales near the Osk River. {OTL and ATL}

my plan is to try to work up to 1905 (for a good reason, at least in OTL)...and shift things a little in the US, in archeology (thus in Egypt), and in physics. but I have to turn off my internet window for the night, and I don't want to lose my notes again, so, partial hiding them:

little things like the ruins of the Adena, the writings of Emilie du Chalet, keeping Western Powers more interested in the archeology of the New World rather than the Old World...and Wallace the physicist (in OTL he was an engineer and a builder for a while)

Divergence: 7 August 1819 - Royalist victory at the Battle of Boyaca.

8 January 1823 - birth of Alfred Russel Wallace in Wales near the Osk River. {OTL and ATL}

  • physics in this ATL have taken a detour, as the idea of attraction has been applied to studies of energy -- a compass magnet changes its direction when placed next to a wire conducting electricty, but the compass no more points parallel to the wire than a passerby turns his head to be parallel to a pretty woman hurrying past: he looks at her, just as the compass points to the wire.
  • as Wallace continues his work over the next decade, he risks centure by relying upon the work of individuals such as Emilie du Chalet, who herself was a fierce advocate of Liebnitz.

1870 - the Spanish policy bites Spain in the ass when a Cardinal born in the city of Tolu leads a movement that took control in the time it took for a message to reach Spain. the policy, minor before Bolivar arose, and major now, is to encourage rural and city priests to encourage ideas of Divine Right to Rule and otherwise tying religion to monarchy {the Tolu Cardinal cited Church father Thomas Aquinas and Jesuit theologian Francisco Suarez}

The Rise of the Turian Alliance

Great to see another entrant! Very interesting start, by the way. Best of luck.

thank you. and best of luck on yours as well.

April 1823 - France is informed of a condition of their surrender: they must surrender to England all Southeast Asian possessions and all claims to the region in the present and for the next century.

  • Dutch settlements in the region are suddenly feeling very very alone.
  • the Catholic missionaries in Vietnam are in trouble.
also in 1823 - Greek rebel leaders, who had been attempting to forment violent rebellion, are captured and killed.

1824 - in Vietnam, King banned missionaries from entering his country.

  • attempts by Britain to engage the nation in trade were unsuccessful before - in 1804 and 1821. but this time, the British aren't going to take no for an answer, not from a French-set-up dynast.
  • fortunately, the man instructed to keep Anglo-Vietnamese trade running smoothly, has Buddhist Indian agents to work as middlemen manning the ships running in and out of Vietnamese ports.
1827 - Bolivar and Olaneta's nation (what's a suitable Anglization? Titecata?) forges trade links with Britain in return for assistance in jump-starting the nation's industry.

1829 - in the spirit of revolution, Haiti liberates her neighboring islands under the banner of freedom.

  • American observers see nothing wrong, and no abuses committed.
the East India Company forms a sub-Company to organize the settling of Terra Australis.

  • in memos, the place is simply called "the Cook".
1836 - Wallace leaves Wales to join his older brother in the field of construction and repairs.

  • it is from this beginning that Alfred Russel will embark on a lifetime engaged in the study of physics.
With the untimely death of Vietnam's King Minh Mạng, the Doctrine of Lapse, used to gain control of the Princely States of India, ensnares Vietnam.

1860 - Norodom, the King of Cambodia, asks England for protection.
Seeking a bulkwart against the Russian Bear, Hungary looks to the Ottomans. Sickly as they are reputed to be, Hungary sees them as the best option available.

as Wallace continues his work over the next decade, he risks cencure(sp?) by relying upon the work of individuals such as Emilie du Chalet, who herself was a fierce advocate of Liebnitz. {basically, the idea of squaring; in OTL, the ² in E=mc² relied upon du Chalet's work}

1866-1869 - the Black Sea War. Primary combatants: Russia vs the Ottoman Empire and Hungary. Side theaters: Russia vs Finland. Popular opinion in central Europe was indifferent ("they're fighting again, as they always do; let them die in that position"). Popular in British lands was in favor of the Ottomans and the Christians in the Ottoman Empire - but mostly to keep the Russian Bear under control; for that reason, British officers were sent to Finland, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire to advise.

  • the Black Sea War signifigantly stalled Russian expansion into Asia.
  • ...which allowed China and slowly-unifying Afghanistan to move into the area.
  • Owing to Chinese and Afghani geography in relation to the Indian States and Southeast Asia, Britain did not send any advisors to China or Afghanistan. (but some in Parliament thought they should)
  • Ras Darwin is stationed on the Afghani border with his wife and children (and brother Charles) not far away in India. On his watch, there were no incidents between the Princely States and the Puritan-ruled Sikhs of Afghanistan.
November 1869 - Russia sues for peace, losing a great deal of land to Hungary and the Ottomans, and a few strategic spots to Finland.

  • Some of the Ottomans' victoriously-aquired land is traded off to Persia in return for continued peace and good trading between them.
1870 - the Spanish policy bites Spain in the ass when a Cardinal born in the city of Tolu leads a movement that took control in the time it took for a message to reach Spain. the policy, minor before Bolivar arose, and major now, is to encourage rural and city priests to encourage ideas of Divine Right to Rule and otherwise tying religion to monarchy {the Tolu Cardinal cited Church father Thomas Aquinas and Jesuit theologian Francisco Suarez}

seeing the Ottoman-Hungarian successes, Finland requests to join the military alliance.

1875-6 - the Ottomans try once more to add Yemen to their holdings.

  • they fail to do so.
  • at the peace tables, Yemen is offered the opportunity to join the Turian Alliance...
  • ...on the condition that Yemen is not siimply a hodgpodge of tribes feuding amongst themselves.
  • the Yemenis agree to join the Alliance, but refuse to let the Ottomans advise them on how to unify.
  • (this is why many Yemenis, even to this day, speak Arabic with a Finnish accent)
=====================
author's note: I'll be honest - my first impulse was to find a reason for Bolivar to flee the nation he'd founded, and end up in the Ottomans' employ, like OTL Captain Hobart, and be one of their weapons against Russia.
but nah.

1829 - in the spirit of revolution, Haiti liberates her neighboring islands under the banner of freedom.

* American observers see nothing wrong, and no abuses committed.

Wonder about this, OTL the US didn't recognize the Nation of Haiti till after the ACW.
The US would consider Haiti' as a Rogue, Adventuring and disrupting the Neighboring Countries

ps: thanks for the prompt reply.

good point. I need to think what would help.

hhmmm....maybe a Monroe-like declaration, with more recently (to the liberatings) all their focus being on the Interior rather than the outlying islands.
(so even if some Senators want to help Haiti's neighbors, they can't; but the POTUS feels that, if Europe sees any inability (ie unable to help Haiti's neighbors), Europe will re-invade the entire hemisphere)

that sound good? if so, I'll edit it to be realized.
