I have been brainstorming a TL involving a strong Gothic empire. I don't have any books as reference at the moment, so I've only been able to use the internet to find information. If anyone can recommend any good books on the subject, that would be great.

POD: Eutharic, Theodoric the Great's son in law survives and is a capable ruler. He continues Theodoric's policy of creating alliances by marrying his female relatives to important Frankish and Visigothic figures. When Childebert invades the Visigoths, Eutharic sends an army to help defend. As a consequence, Amalaric survives longer.

He then capitalizes on his success against the Franks by playing Clovis' sons off each other, relieving Frankish pressure for some time.

He dies around 540 and is succeeded by Athalaric. Since he grew up under the guidance of his father ITL and not being controlled by Gothic nobles, he is a stronger ruler. When his cousin Amalaric is assassinated in 545 by a usurper (dunno who yet), he uses this as a pretext to invade the Visigoths. After defeating the usurper, he becomes king of all the Goths.

So, what do you think? It obviously needs a lot of work, but I wanted some thoughts on how plausible it is first. So do I just need to change a few details? Rework the entire thing? Scrap the whole idea?
