TL Idea: Second Mexican-American War

Ok, since I am getting reprimanded for doing doing timelines right, and I going to "bounce around some ideas" and get feedback and do some research. It may take me awhile, but if I wanna get noticed on here, I have to do it right.

The idea:

What if the Zimmerman telegram was successful, and Mexico joins the Central Powers? Does this mean war with the U.S.? If so, what would a Second Mexican-American War be like?

Thanks. Please give me some good feedback. :)

Mexican President Venustiano Carranza assigned a general to assess the feasibility of a Mexican takeover of their former territories. The general concluded that it would not be possible or even desirable for the following reasons:

  • Attempting to re-take the former territories would mean certain war with the United States.

  • No matter how "generous" it was, Germany's "financial support" would be worthless. Mexico could not use it to acquire arms, ammunition, or other war supplies, because the United States was the only sizable arms manufacturer in the Americas. The Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic sea lanes, so Germany could not possibly supply any quantity of arms.

  • Even if Mexico had the military means to re-take the territory it would have had severe difficulty accommodating and/or pacifying the large English-speaking population.

  • Mexico had even cooperated with the ABC nations to prevent a war with the United States, generally improving relations. If Mexico were to enter war against USA it would strain relations with ABC nations—who would later declare war on Germany.
Carranza formally declined Zimmermann's proposals on April 14, by which time the U.S. had declared war on Germany.

This is all obvious. But let's say that Carranza folds under public pressure to accept Germany's terms and declare war on the United States. It's an obvious American victory.

*Bandwagon!*

Mexico, post-Mexican/American war, was racked by political instability and civil wars. It could not hope to compete with the United States, and were it to enter war against America, it would be decimated rather quickly. That's why Germany's request was both idiotic and mad.

How close to OTL do you want to follow, as per the previous posts Mexico as it stood was in no shape to iniate a war in 1914-17.

Question is what POD would have to change that Mexico starts modernizing and slowly build up infrastructure, industry and military enough for it to think that it could attack US.

What about a US that lost the Civil War, does it ally itself with one of the Americas against the other.

Lots of great opportunities and possibilities just need to know what you want.

First, what is a POD?

Second, thanks for the suggestions. :)

Mexico wasn't exactly unified at the time. Most of the generals were not loyal to the state and pretty much did whatever they wanted. Pancho Villa and Zapata could decide to march on Mexico City if they felt it would pay off. No, Mexico couldn't attack anyone.
