TL Idea: Frank Sinatra Enters Politics (1964-On)

I am currently working on two other Timelines as the moment (the McGovern one which is long overdue) but I decided I wanted to try my hand at one that is relatively minor in comparison, a short story if you will. The basic idea I have is that Sinatra decides after the Kennedy Assassination to enter politics (supposedly it took a rather heavy, emphasis on heavy, toll on him despite their break in '62) and runs for the US Senate Seat in California. Considering the scandals that plagued the Salinger and the close margin of the race even under those conditions (not to mention Sinatra likely would have been appointed Senator by Governor Brown as Salinger was) I don't see him losing.

From there is obviously gets blurry as it is just an idea, no major research has been done yet. Possibly he supports Bobby Kennedy in '68 depending on how their relations were (I know Sam Giancana is going to cause tensions) and assuming a close working relationship in the Senate; Butterflies can do anything when your mind is put to them, and admittedly one of my favorite ideas along the Kennedy line was for Sinatra to escort Kennedy through Ambassador Hotel only to be shot and killed by Sirhain Sirhain in Kennedy's place. I doubt I will do that though since that would make the story especially brief, and I am not about to write an epic on Bobby Kennedy when others have already (or are rather in the long laborious process of) written such.

Depending on how people perceive the realism of this idea, we will see if I choose to undertake it.

Sinatra was the only member of the Rat Pack to support Humphrey in '68. He wasn't a fan of JFK or RFK, the former of which snubbed him in favor of Republican Bing Crosby at some event or another in Washington.

Cool I personally prefer his more right leaning version (1970-On). I can link to a tl by Han that ends with Sinatra elected in 1972 after serving as Governor (1967-1973). Sadly, it wasn't continued past there.

Supposedly, from what I have read so far, he and JFK had a close friendship. The Cosby snub only came about because Bobby was investigating organized crime and Sinatra had connections with the Italian Mob, which would have presented a rather poor image.

Also Dean Martin and Joey Bishop supported Humphrey as well; the Rat Pack was evenly split between the two major candidates in '68.

Sinatra is likely to be a centrist since I still see him shifting toward the Right, but it depends on how I write it up and how the history of the United States develops. Reagan was a big part of that shift to the Republican Party and there is a good chance there will be such significant changes that Reagan won't even be in the picture.

That was the TL in which Al Smith was elected President of the US in 1932. The Democrats become the conservative party and the Republicans (post-Robert Taft) become the liberal party.

Well I am guessing this idea is dead in the water. I'll continue with my other projects.

Forget this post. The moment I placed it I regretted it. This will now become my foremost project for the time being, and we'll see how it goes.

The White House? More Like The Wet House! by hantheguitarman

List is basically:
32. Al Smith/John Garner (D) 1933-1941
33. Charles McNary/Robert Taft (R) 1941-1943
34. Robert Taft/vacant, Harold Stassen (R) 1943-1949
35. James Byrnes/John McCormack (D) 1949-1953
36. Joe Kenned Jr./Goodwin Knight (R) 1953-1961
37. Barry Goldwater/George Smathers (D) 1961-1969
38. Hubert H Humphrey/Richard Nixon (R) 1969-1973
39. Frank Sinatra/John Connally (D) 1973

Basically, despite Smith's Presidency, the party went so far to the right, the Kennedys fled to the Republicans, which is why we get Joe Jr. as a Republican. Han, being a Goldawater fan, had Goldwater be one of America's greatest Presidents, with the defeat of the Soviet Union, economic boom, landslide re-election, etc. Sadly, he quit after 1972, so, like most Han tls I've seen, it stops after the most epic election.
