Let's say that the American Revolution never occured would the French economy still be on the verge of bankruptcy? If not how could one do that?

yes, Louis XVI was spending money like water as his father and grandfather did before him, the only way i see is to stop the royals from spending so much French money.
 
All right a little details please. I know he wanted to build up his navy to be greater than Britains so could he cause France to become bankrupt that way?

what do you think it costs to keep Versailles open? a lot, he also started building more on Versailles. just go get the movie Marie Antoinette and you'll get an idea how they lived, Louis XV spend enough money on himself and his family to bankrupt France

I usually don't like to trust Hollywood as they tend to embelish and dramatize things.
