Operation Valkyrie

"Is the Fuhrer Dead?"
"Not quite"

On July 20th, A bomb rips through the conference building of Hitler's Wolfshanze. The explosion immediately kills Generals Rudolf Schmundt, Gunther Korten, Colonel Heinz Brandt, and a stenographer Heinrich Berger. The bomb destroyed the entire room and as Hitler lay on the floor immobile it was clear that this assassination attempt succeeded, or had it.

Stauffenberg rushed to the airport, he was sure that the plot had succeeded and that all was going to plan. Little did he know that the Fuhrer was indeed alive, however weakly. Convincing three checkpoint guards to let him through, Stauffenberg boarded a plane heading for Berlin. Confident that Hitlers Germany was near ending and a new government was going to take hold, he thought of the next few hours.

What would turn out to be a turning moment General Erich Fellgiebel phoned his fellow conspirators and informed them, mistakenly, that Hitler was indeed dead. The Co-conspirators went into action. General Fromm was then confronted with the knowledge that Hitler was dead and that Valkyrie must be initialized. Fromm nervously attempted to contact General Keitel, however lines of communication had not yet been reestablished and Fromm received no answer. He had two options the first he could join with the plotters and face treason if the plot fails, or he could refuse to follow the plotters and face treason if the plot succeeds. Fromm ordered Operation Valkyrie to be commenced. The Reserve army leapt into action. Word spread throughout the city that the Fuhrer was Dead, very quickly the Government center of Berlin was under the control of the plotters.

Goebbels paced back and forth, yelling at his secretary to get in touch with the Fuhrer, however the lines were still not up. Watching from the window of his apartment he stared down as Major Remer and the Berlin garrison made their way to him. While his secretary was frantically calling the wolfs lair, he grabbed a cyanide capsule and bit. The Reich Minister for Propaganda was dead.

As Stauffenberg exited his plane the airport was a flurry of activity. Three hours now had passed since the order for Valkyrie was authorized and the Airport had been secured. Stauffenberg rushed to the Bendlerblock. When he arrived he he was greeted with two vastly different phone calls. The first was from Field Marshal Kluge in Paris, the entire Paris SS was detained and that he had been attempting to contact the Western Allies. However the second phone call was not as good. As General Fromm lowered the phone from his ear he looked at Stauffenberg with a stone cold face, "General Keitel has informed me that our Fuhrer is indeed alive, and that you are to be arrested."

This is a first draft of so by all means eat away at it... :)
