The election of 1996. An important election for the United States.
Tom Harkin (R-IO) promises social liberalism and a slight shift to the left for his Republican Party. If he wins, he'll look in allowing same-sex partnerships. Tsongas has declined to run due to illness.
Alina Fernandez (S-CU) and her Socialist Party is focusing on social conservatism now, having put nationalization aside for "after they win." To be honest, nationalization and other Socialist ideals are getting less important in the party as social issues dominate the day. If she wins, she'll be the first female president of the United States, and the first Socialist one since Biden. Her running mate, Tom Daschle is the last of a dying breed of Jacksonite Socialists, unfortunately.
Jack Kemp (D-NY) and his Democratic Party promises immigration reform in response to the increase of Mexican immigrants due to the Civil War there. They're in the middle of an ideological shift now, though.
Their running mates are Michael Dukakis (R-MA), Tom Daschle (S-DA) and Donald Rumsfeld (D-IL)
