TL-191: Navy Blue and Gray - Naval Forces of the USA and CSA

As I am making my Royal Navy and Friends graphic, I have an interesting question about the development of their destroyers, specifically following their L and M class. IOTL, after this class, the British kinda went back on some design and main armament as part of their War Emergency Flotilla to replace losses they suffered in 1939 and 1940. But here, I am thinking for ITTL's O and P class, they would perhaps make some refinements to the L and M design.

Well, I finally finished this, a chart of the Warships belonging to British and Commonwealth Naval Forces

Virginia Class 1913.png

The Virginia Class Dreadnought was the second to Last class of dreadnought ordered and the last class fully commissioned by the Confederate Navy prior to the Great War. Because the Confederacy lacked slips long enough they were all built in France and Britain. They were armed with the same 12in/52 guns in four triple turrets that the Russian Dreadnoughts of the Gangut class carried. They also shared the Gangut's 8 to 4 inch armor belts and 23 knot speed. There were three Virginia class ships the CSS Virginia, the CSS Arkansas and the CSS Kentucky.

During the Grest War they were stationed with the Atlantic Fleet in Charleston, South Carolina. They would work with the British and French Navies to ensure supply convoys made it safely to Britain and France. However on June 12,1916 they would take part in the Battle of Hatteras Island . This battle saw a Confederate and Royal Navy taskforce engage the USNs Southern fleet as they attempted to land marines on the North Carolina barrier islands. The battle would be a Entente victory with the USN losing the battleships Delaware, New Jersey, and Maine while the Entente fleet lost the HMS Orion and the CSS Arkansas.

Following the Treaty of Philadelphia the two surviving ships of the class would be Surrendered to the USA. However the USN found them unsuited to there fleet and both ships would be sold to the Empire of Brazil in 1919.

1922 New Navy Program ships.png

The 1922 New Navy Program was the first major Confederate military program since the end of the great war in 1917l. The brain child of Assistant Secretary of the Navy William Willard West this program despite its modest scale, given the economic state of the Confederacy at the time it was started it was daring in its own right. The big ticket item to most people appeared to be the Four battlecruiser of the Texas Class that the plan called to be built. However most historians agree that it was the River Class Frigates of which 23 were build and the JEB Stuart Class Destroyers of which 60 would be built that were the main starts of the program. Many historians note that the major achieve was the salvation of the Confederacy's domestic shipbuilding ability. Many historians note that Confederate Shipyards actually grew because of this program and many French naval designers and shipwrights that would flee to the confederacy to escaped the turmoil of the second Reign of Terror that gripped France during the 1920s.

General Class 1915.png

The General Class Battleships (sometimes referred to as the Longstreet Class) were the last class of Battleships ordered by the Confederate States of America. The Follow on to the Virginia Class the General featured the same protection scheme as the Virginia's 8 to 4 inch armor belts with 2.5 to 1 inches armor on her decks. They carried the same 12/52 guns but only carried nine of them in three triple turrets. In place of the fourth turret she featured extra engine machinery this would allow the General Class Ships to have a top speed of 27.5 knots. While the British and French Navies considered them Battlecruisers the CSN Dubbed them Fast Battleships. Ordered in 1912 the CSS Longstreet would be delivered on the eve of war, the CSS Stonewall Jackson would be delivered at the end of 1914. The Third ship of the class the CSS Robert E. Lee would be seized by the French and pressed into service with the Marine National as the L'Indépendance, upon her completion in 1916, the French government would agree to reimburse the Confederate states for the cost of the ship but no payment was to be sent till after the war was over. Following the Entente defeat these payments were quickly forgotten by the Government of the Third Republic.

The Ships would have very different careers during the war . The CSS Longstreet would take part in the battle of Hatteras Island where she is credited with sinking the pre dreadnought battleship USS New Jersey. Following the Battle of Hatteras Island she would join her sister CSS Stonewall Jackson operating with the Royal Navy's South Atlantic Fleet. When the CSA surrendered the ships would be briefly impressed by the Royal Navy they would be with the British Fleet that challenged the American South Atlantic Fleet operating off the coast of Argentina which turned back before battle was joined. After the war they would be taken by the USA as war prizes and renamed the USS Nathaniel Green, and USS Knox. The L'Indépendance would spend the war in the Mediterranean Sea, and would not see any real combat.

Following the war the L'Indépendance would be given to the Austro-Hungarian Navy where she would be recommissioned as the SMS Franz Ferdinand.

I am bit curious as what the Ensign of the French Navy would look like by the time of the Second Great War.
I'm going to guess either a blue or white ensign smothered in fleur-de-lis. The old royal naval ensign was just a plain white flag, which is clearly out of the question now.

I was thinking that the French Ensign would be similar to this one flown by the Free French Navy, but with some royalist symbols replacing the Lorraine Cross.

I'd say it depends on how constitutional or absolutist the Third Kingdom is. The restored Bourbons went back to the old white banner and such, but then readopted the tricolor under the House of Orleans.
