TL-191: Lt. Jake Featherston

How would TL-191 have changed (post-GW1) if Jake Featherston had somehow made officer rank at some point during the first Great War?

IIRC, this was one of his main points of anger.

He ends up as an officer in the Tin Hats (Confederate Freikorps) in the early post war period. Being middle class could make him a potential Radical-Liberal voter, and maybe a political activist, if he wasn't such a racist anti-yankee revanchist.

You can accuse Featherston of being many things, but middle class will never be one of them.

Absolutely correct: in the beginning of Blood and Iron, until he found the Freedom Party, he lived off beer and free meals in bars and slept by the statue of Albert Sidney Johnson in Richmond.

What I meant to say is that him receiving an officer's pay could improve his living standard, making him less likely to join a group like the early Freedom Party. The reason why he has been promoted is also pretty important. Is it because Potter arrested Jeb Stuart's manservant and thus limiting the rebellion or this incident is completly avoided and he is promoted for being a competent soldier?

Actually, he had a room by then. But still hardly an American success story.

An officer's pay isn't that great an improvement over a noncom's, especially if it's just one step up from sergeant. And it means jack shit if Featherston is going to be tossed out of the Army along everyone else if the CSA still loses the war. Whatever savings he'll have means jack shit sprayed out of a wind tunnel at 600 mph when hyperinflation hits immediately following demobilization. And finally, if one's social status or income determines the likelihood of someone joining the Freedom Party, why did people like Anne Colleton and Willy Knight sell their souls alongside poor white folks like Featherston and Pinkard?
