TL 191 HOI4 Mod Update and Discussion Thread

Fun mod, but a *lot* of bugs in the USA path in particular. And the Entente power have a habit of shipping all their troops to America, which means Germany goes YOLO.

Military coup stuff is currently a bit broken, it shouldn't fire during the war, only if its lost. It will be fixed in the bugfix coming later today. The US will be receiving a full rework in 0.2 as well, with more in-depth paths.
We are sticking to our policy of total adherence to canon though.
That's great! Shame about the latter part, considering that I feel that the canon is the worst part of the mod, lol.

I never read the "Southern Victory" book series but I am enjoying this mod because of the potential in the mod to really grow. What I love the most in HOI4 mods is branching stories with detail. Good luck to U!

I don't know anything about this mod, but if they ever want to expand on stuff involving Huey, this old thread would make good inspiration:

@Tiro had a ton of great ideas and deep analysis.

My impressions: winning as the USA is way too easy, and it's more than possible to have all issues resolved well before Featherston attacks. I think the military tree length should be doubled, so that way the US army is still a bit of a mess by the time the Confederates come. As it stands I was able to conquer the South before 1942

I think the way the military focuses are tied to research is a nice way to balance it.

Winning as the USA SHOULD be easy. The South has few natural resources, massive internal problems, a comically outdated economy even with Turtledove's lazy and implausible handwaves, and is led by a crazy fascist. Simply not being lead-paint-drinkingly inept should be enough for the USA to curbstomp the CSA without massive international intervention on America's side.

Oh, it should definitely be easy if this was an unbiased what if the south had won mod, but given that it's trying to recreate the southern victory series it fails in that goal in terms of making the South Germany to America's USSR. The South, even with me shooting myself in the foot for a challenge, was Poland to my Germany.

I mean, the South being Nazi Germany to the North's USSR was far and away one of the top 3 worst things about the entire series. It was a horrible, cliched, nonsensical allusion that didn't actually work at all and quite frankly was tied in with all the stuff like Featherston in general that ruined what dignity the series had left.

The farther this mod can get from that idiocy, the better.

The mod follows a structure of sticking to the lore of the series, so there is nothing that can be changed.

But I agree with your points, I think that the worst part is Featherstons trying a holocaust, because Jews were less than 1% of the german population, while in the southern USA some states got 30% of blacks, so basically he's killing close to half of his population while driving deep into the northern USA, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE???

At the very least starting the Population Reduction should effectively kill the Confederate war effort stone dead and result in the near-immediate collapse of the state.

Honestly, I would be all for the mod subtly moving against the grain of the novels. The Deseret and Canadian revolts, for example, should only happen under an authoritarian USA. Featherston shouldn't have a chance in Hell without massive entente intervention unopposed by the Central Powers. That kinda thing.

(I also really don't like most of the non-FP trees for the CSA, but then I think the CSA in general is the worst part of the mod because it hews so close to the garbage books)

Well, I don’t think the idea of Confederate Nazis is a nonsensical idea at all. The Confederacy was founded on the idea that white people were superior to black people and that black people should remain enslaved. That eventually leading to full-blown genocide actually makes sense.

What is nonsensical is how Turtledove does nothing to distinguish the Freedom Party from the Nazis, Operation Blackbeard from Operation Barbossa, and the Population Reduction from the Holocaust.

It's not nonsensical that the Confederates are awful racists, no, and genocide is theoretically plausible.

The idea that the CSA is (a) still around as such, (b) functioning just like Nazi Germany, (c) run by Legally Distinct From versions of all the Nazis, and (d) able to actually fight a serious war effort against the Union? That's bad comedy. At best.

Also we had problems since Turtledove didn't checked the brazilian sucession, so he has Dom Pedro IV leading Brazil during WWI. Dom Pedro IV was born in 1913 and would only be crowned in 1940 after his father died, and thus we had to do something and the solution was killing Empress Isabel 10 years before she died OTL, crowning Dom Pedro III, then killing him just after he had a son and crowning his brother (who was not even called Pedro in the first time) and making him Dom Pedro IV.

Say what you want on Southern Victory, but Lincoln as a socialist is an absolutely brilliant idea. It's weird that I (so far) haven't seen any other AH writers try to tackle this idea.

Playing as the US

I actually greatly enjoy the way the Army tree is set up where you have to research doctrines up to a certain level in order to get rid of the negative effects, it makes a lot of logical sense.

Game worked fine until July of 1940(and the end of the first month of the Second Great War), where it has repeatedly crashed over and over

Which sucks because I have 250 divisions to a hundred and fifty Confederate ones, and I was about open a massive can of whoop ass up on Jake the Snake.
