TL-191 Fridge Logic thread:

Leaving Japan alone in 1917 actually made sense...

Did leaving japan alone in the 30s after it was caught arming Canadian rebels, after it torpedoed a US carrier, and after it bombed the US mainland make "sense"?

I think you need to keep in mind however that Japan switched sides at the end of WW2 and started attacking Britain and forcing Russia out of Vladivostok. Why would Germany and the US attack an "ally" in a region that doesn't really affect or matter to them?

That's the situation in 1944. In the Great War, Japan is an ally of Russia and the 1930s Japan arms Canadian rebels, torpedoes US warships, and bombs Los Angeles.

Got an excuse for ignoring Japan then?

You responded to my post which was talking about Japan. You even quoted a sentence from that post which mentions Japan explicitly:

If you weren't talking about Japan, why did you respond to a post about Japan and quote a sentence which mentions Japan?

I found one rather quickly and quickly found something even more interesting in it.

You can find the thread here and the last person to post in it is YOU.

Would you care to explain to us how you can manage to post on December 5th, 2010 in a thread discussing in general what the characters in TL 191 look like and in specific what Featherston looks like and then whine for help in finding threads which discuss in general what the characters in TL 191 look like and in specific what Featherston looks like on December 31st, 2010?

Are you an amnesiac? A troll? Or something else?

that particular thread didn't contain what i was looking for, so i ruled that one out and was looking for others that might provide an answer closer to what I was looking for, so while I did post to that thread, it wasn't what I was looking for. And i'm relatively new here on this site and only post occasionally. i don't mean to offend anyone and I was simply making a comment about turtledove's characters. I have no intention to harass anyone and I am sorry if my comment offended you in any way. :(

This will be my last post in this thread by the way, I'm just going to go back to observing silently... sorry... have a nice day everyone and Happy New Year!

What's your beef Lardo? Why are you picking on the new guy? It's an AH site, people are going to ask questions, if they don't get an answer, they will look for another thread or post to find out. Chill out, dude.

That thread in which you posted contained a fan illustration of Featherston, Turtledove's descriptions of Featherston, and several suggestions about which actors could play Featherston, so what more are you looking for?

I have no intention to harass anyone and I am sorry if my comment offended you in any way. :(

You haven't done anything to harass anyone and you most certainly haven't offended me.

All you have done is pose a very odd mystery.

I'm not picking on him, white knight. I'm asking questions about his extremely odd behavior.

First, he responds to a post of mine about Japan while quoting a sentence which explicitly mentions Japan. Then, when I answer him, he claims his response wasn't about Japan.

Next, he asks for ideas about what Featherston looks like despite the fact he'd already posted in a thread with a picture of Featherston in it and several suggestions about which current actors could play Featherston.

That's what I'm doing, asking questions. Asking questions about some very odd behavior.

Seriously Im not sure if it was the same dude but someone was talking about how a common writing theme was that people were never in a position to "do a damn thing about it" also that thread didnt have some of the answers I was looking for. Like these old alt TL-191 threads that people keep talking about. So dude calm down or gtfo

We had a character in occupied Washington during ww1, but nothing during ww2. Was DC only shelled during ww 2.

Why didnt the US just send its ships to link up with the German fleet and then crush the Royal navy?

Why didnt the US try to invade from the sea at any point?

I have no answer to the first question.
But I do have a possible answer to 2 and 3. TL 191 army was a lot larger than OTL's but it's navy was the same size. Now you would think both would grow but maybe the US govt. was trying to keep costs in check and there was no empire building by the navy.

Not even shelled. The US-CS border was over 50 miles to the south, along the Rappahannock. It was bombed a lot, though -- Armstrong Grimes reminded us about that.

Why didnt the US just send its ships to link up with the German fleet and then crush the Royal navy?

Because the German fleet was blocked in port during both wars; because the Anglo-Confederates occupied Bermuda, Ireland and the Bahamas to prevent the USN from reaching Europe during the second war.

Why didnt the US try to invade from the sea at any point?

There were the landings on Baja, Bermuda and in Haiti, and MacArthur tried to land on the James-York Peninsula but got stopped by his superiors for good reason.

Besides that, why would the USA invade the CSA from sea? (assuming you're referring to "invade" as in "establishing a large-scale permanent presence on enemy soil")

How about a D-Day analog? The navy takes troops to the coast of Georga to starta second frount aganst the CSA.

I was planning to do it as a story and imitate Turtledove's style in a parodic way myself. So if you want to have a go as well but do it as a timeline, there's no clash there.

Hrm.... Alright, I may at that. It'd be interesting to see just how many different "realistic takes" on Turtledove's world could be taken.

I am drunk (fucking loaded) right now. Do you really need someone to explain to you the difficulties of large-scale amphibious warfare without a base to launch from? Because I can do so right now, after an effort, but I'd rather not...

Don Lardo-

I never said it made sense to leave them alone in the 1930s, but in 1917 and 1944, Japan was not really the USA's biggest problem. So it made sense to leave alone.

My impression is that the whole Canadian occupation isn't that popular (why they didn't give the Canadians independence or statehood is beyond me), so a war because of it isn't exactly going to give the government a strong footing.

I'm really sorry Don Lardo and Keevy, but this is the funniest thing I've seen on this board in ages.....:p:p:p

Why the Canadians don't get set free was spelled out at least once -- the British Empire will come marching right back in on the heels of the Americans, and then encirclement and two-front war all over again.

What exactly did Action Française do that whenever anyone talked about them they were seen as evil? I could see them being a bit abusive to Protestants but not on a Holocaust level.

I always saw them as the "Italy" to the CSA's Nazi Germany. Unpleasant, but not to Holocaust levels, but vilified to the same level mostly by association.

Then who's Britain? Hungary?

Well, they get nuked most, especially per unit of land. They have a monarch. I'd say that makes them Japan.

OTOH, they have characteristics of Germany (but that title goes to the CSA) in one respect. They have a neighbor, smaller and less industrialized than they, with whom they have had ethnic tensions for centuries and have conquered. This territory gains its independence and immediately allies with the enemies of the occupying country. It gets overrun in the opening days of the Second War, despite a valiant defense and a strong insurgency after the conquest. This nation is also majority Catholic, wheras the occupying power is largely Protestant.

Therefore, Ireland = Poland, and Britain, at least here, = Germany.

Where does Russia fit into all this? Joining in on invading the territory and allies of the power that won the Great War, gets nuked first, what is it?

Oh, and now that I think of it, Huey Long is an Engelbert Dolfuss analogue.
