Its probably because there's a strong third party, and the South, even though its still solidly Democrat, has less states voting.

I like how Alberta even in this TL is still generally more conservative than its neighboring states.
Probably has to do with the David following Turtledove's avoidance of certain cultural butterflies - like British Columbia still being called British Columbia as a state and not just Columbia. To the fact that regardless, Alberta has oil and would indeed be more fiscally conservative regardless.

Thank you to everyone who voted. I'm glad that this ATL warranted the award. I like how Alberta even in this TL is still generally more conservative than its neighboring states.
With Alberta, I imagined that most of the US settlers who arrived in the former province generally came from conservative parts of the US, especially the Rocky Mountain West. One thing that I wanted to avoid with the Canadian states in TTL was having them all vote as a bloc for one political party.
