Tito in the United States

I was watching an old A&E documentary (remember those?) on Tito. One of the historians mentioned that he and his father wanted to emigrate to the United States but couldn't afford the boat fare. Now I don't know how true this is or not, but supposing it is true and they managed to scrounge up enough money in say 1900, could Tito have made something of himself in the states?

He obviously can't be president, but could he join the military (he was an able soldier in WW1) or rise to the leadership of the AFL-CIO, or even start a business? He's certainly charismatic enough.

Tito became a communist because he was captured by the russian army during WW1 while fighting for austriahungary and was right in the middle of the revolution.

If he is in the US he probably never becomes a communist, much less a soviet spy.

His career in the US could go many ways,he clearly demonstrated an impressive ability to command troops so he might excel in the US army,or he might settle for a more modest civilian job.

Another question is what happens to Yugoslavia without Tito?

There were plenty of communists still around, still i doubt they get that far, tito was unique because he was a croat-slovene with no ethnic prejudice and with long scale expirience working as a soviet spy in western europe.

Finding someone like him could be very difficult.

Chances are the old churchill-stalin deal goes through and a relatively neutral kingdom of yugoslavia is restored with the original ruling family.
The chetnicks would probably have large power in such a nation thou and after all the ustasa did i think it would turn into a giant croatia-screw.

Tito as an American military commander would be fascinating, to say the least.

Might make the US forces in europe performe better actually,a lot of the allied generals were either to stiff(montgomery) or to reckless(patton),having a general with a talent for infiltration and subtilety could speed up a few fronts.
