Let’s say Josip Broz Tito dies sometime between 1951 and 1953 (perhaps from some sort of accident like falling down the stairs, choking to death, etc.) As far as I know, Tito’s second-in-command was Milovan Djilas, who later became one of the most vocal critics of the Yugoslav regime.

So, what if Milovan Djilas were to be become leader of Yugoslavia? Would Djilas have been successful in implementing a socialist democracy in Yugoslavia?

Would having Djilas as leader have accelerated, delayed, or prevented the dissolution of Yugoslavia?

How would Yugoslav relations with the West and with the Eastern Bloc have evolved? Would the Soviets have overthrown the Yugoslav government?

What other ramifications would this have on Yugoslavia, the Balkans, and the Cold War in general?
