The hammer and sickle is not strictly of the USSR, the hammer and sickle is a form of proletarian symbolism that symbolises international proletarian unity and solidarity as they are tools used by laborers and farmers even in modern day with the invention of more modern machinery and equipment, they are still relevant symbols of the workers of society and the proletariat of the world as a whole.
Still prominently featured on the Austrian coat of arms; it was adopted in 1918 and has links to socialism, but survived both the Nazi government and the Cold War...

Just a note of caution... resurrecting a thread this old is considered a "necro", and may result in a warning from the mods and getting the thread locked. Would be better to start your own thread on this subject, with a link to this thread and "inspired by..." or something to that effect :)
