Tips for creating custom maps for my stories (SVG)

Hello, everybody. I want to clarify that I do not have experience in editing maps, much less in SVG format, but I would like to try to learn and make my own maps for my alternative stories.
But I have some doubts:
* Is it obligatory to learn the size of a territorial entity to make a map?
* How do you know in which "part" the territorial limits are located without making a mistake and putting them at 100 km of real distance?
* What other advice do you give me?

Practice. Probably start out with some Worldas. Go from there.

Remember, a map is just as much art as it is a tool. You can make a map that is more art than tool and vice versa, but it is still an admixture of both. It's like playing a banjo; you can only pick and you can only strum but to be a true master you have to pick and strum. And remember, a map tells just as much of a story as any words you write do.
