Timur in Europe

The Ottoman Empire suffered a catastrophic defeat at Ankara in 1402 by Timur. It was due to the intervention of Venetian and Genovese ships that the remnants of the Ottoman army could escape across the Dardanelles and arrive in Europe. What if the Italian ships decide to not give sanctuary to the Ottomans, perhaps out of fear from Timur or being paid off by the Timurids, allowing them to be slaughtered by the Timurids. Instead, Tamerlane and his army is ferried across. What happens to the Ottoman Empire? Byzantium?

They cause a lot of trouble and ruin your victory in MTW2(sorry love elephant artillery)

Europe wasn't as wealthy as China and India.

Though I imagine Timur might be tempted to follow the path of his ancestors in going west.

The savior of the Byzantines might become their destroyer-if the Byzantines are smart they will declare vassalage to him and pay tribute. Timur being satisfied heads north from the caucusus mountains and goes into Eastern Europe or Russia.

He plunders and slaughters and probably destroys multiple cities and castles and loots and pillages and piles up armies of skulls. The Europeans put up ineffectual coalitions to oust him and he leaves satisfied with the loot and tributary payments he has received and goes back to Central Asia.

Biggest beneficiary here is probably venice. They took the deal, they point Timur at Hungary and the Ottomans.

I would note that Europe is influx at this time- the schism is ongoing as is the Hundred Years War, whilst in Italy the duke of Milan is beating the coalitions and poised to march on Florence. Meanwhile the hussites are a decade away from raising a stink in Bohemia and the Habsburgs are divided and weak...

An actually successful Second Battle of the Vorskla River is also likely, in my opinion. Especially since the Lithuanians already have tons of experience fighting the Mongols at the time.

Timur will not live long enough to ravage Europe beyond any sort of Ottoman holdouts across the Bosporus or Byzantine lone holdings. A Timurid invasion of Russia is out of the question almost completely, there is no way he will live to see it and his successor Shah Rukh, already old, will need to defend his right to rule through inner conflict almost immediately in the heartlands.
