Times in History Dead Empires Could have been restored

I realize that my first answer was preventing the fall of an empire instead of resurrecting it, so at the risk of massively oversimplifying things have Adad-nirari (OTL the Second) of Assyria lose his power struggle for the throne, butterflying the rise of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. This gives the Neo-Hittite states of Anatolia breathing room and one could very well conquer the others and reestablish the Hittite Empire.

You misspelled "hell"

The Saffarid dynasty of modern Afghanistan successfully beats the Abbasid caliphate in Mesopotamia in the 870's, restoring the Sassanian empire under an Islamic guise?
Why have the Saffarids do that, when you can have the Zoroastrian Mardavij do the same a few decades later?

Mardavij sprung up in a period when Zoroastrianism was in sharp decline in Iran. That's one of the main reasons as to why he was assassinated by his Turkic guards. After he died, his heirs would convert to Islam, and i could see him doing the same if he attains full control of the Iranian plateau
And when i mentioned the Saffarids restoring the Sassanian empire, i added "under an islamic guise".
