Hello everyone! First time poster, though...curiously enough, I am not unfamiliar with the subject of this thread.
Not in the slightest. I am the newsgroup poster formerly known as MarinerJRMB @ MCHSI.com (Jay and Ruth) and I was responsible for the initial challenge which, 4 years later, is still being discussed! Oddly enough, I was doing a google on Stavos Keneclius when I came upon reference to that group post, and here we are in 2007 still talking about it.
Well, I am here to say that I am STILL in search of that ideal timeline that explain the rise and fall of Khan and the Eugenics 'supermen' and how the Eugenics Wars/WWIII lead to the rise and fall of Colonel Green and further beyond into the realm of interstellar conflict (i.e. the Earth-Kzin Wars). What a pleasant surprise indeed to find this forum.
That being said, I believe I have a few items to add to the discussion. In the episode "Space Seed", Spock clearly states that the "the mid-1990s was the era of your last so-called world war". Further along in the episode, he mentions the 'wars to end tyranny'. Considering the state of international affairs in our own continuum, what a spooky set coincidences!
Nevertheless, that little throw-away line might be the key to literally everything that happens next. In the fanon reference guide "The USS Enterprise Officers Manual" (1980) by Geoff Mandel, there is a fragmentary "copy" of a New York Times article which mentions a date for when the eugenics supermen are introduced publicly for the first time, 22 Sept 1990. It goes on to mention a bit of the backstory. The entire sequence of events came about when the "UN Committee on Eugenics Research" initated a secretive program to study and develop eugenically-bred humans. This UN-sanctioned committee was chaired by none other than Stavos Keneclius with research facilities being established in various third world nations (which would seem to support a few contentions offered earlier in this thread).
We know fairly clearly, based on actual show dialog, that the Eugenics wars were quite overt in nature and not at all the subject of some "secret wars" supported by the Cox novels (an effort to make clearly derivative history FIT with real-time events). This further supports the theory that Star Trek future history is decidely derivative and the sequence of events very much the part of an alternate timeline.
The USS Enterprise Officers Manual (EOM) addds further to what might have occured. In 1994, it mentions that the United Nations Peace Forces (UNPF) was established and that after the 2030s, it replaced all national armed forces and militias after a conflict the EOM calls the 'clone war'. Now, would it not be interesting to tie in Spock's statement concering the 'wars to end tyranny' with the establishment of the UNPF, which is in effect, the first world army on planet Earth? Myself, I see a situation where the flow of history runs nearly parallel with our own (with the US-led 'wars on terror') with the UN leading the way. I do not accept the idea that perhaps the UN folded under pressure when the Khanate was formed and the events which followed. I DO see a situation where the UN "grows some bollocks" and takes a lead in the world stage; actually doing what its Charter says it should and could do. So instead of a single "cowboy" nation leading a global "war on terror", we have the UN and its Peace Forces conducted the wars to End Tyranny beginning in 1994.
The effort lead in whole or in part to the collapse of the Khanate and the eugenics supermen by 1996, however I do not believe the global campaign ended there. Following the censure and subsequent exile of Keneclius and his ilk, I could see emboldened UN conducting at least three years of "mopping up", that is the neutralizing of petty dictatorships and "copy-cat" authoritarian regimes which might arise out of the vacuum that was the Great Khanate. Another fanon reference, the Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual, suggests that a second 'dark ages' fell over much of planet Earth and it lasted until at least 2000. What was left of the "third world" would be the epicenter of the period of hardship.
It was out of the vacuum that was the Khanate that the seeds for the "Eastern Coalition of Nations" as mentioned in STFC were sewn and the way paved for Colonel Edward Featherstone Green. But before we tackle THAT bit of history, I would like to see what you guys think.
