Tibetan Independence

Can anyone get Tibet to stay independent under the Dali Lama it doesn't have to control all the territory that Tibet used to my personal idea was that the civil war in China last longer maybe ending in a north south situation or with the PRC winning but slower and with heavier casualties than OTL. Independent India decides to help the government of Tibet and gives it diplomatic recognition in order to modernize the area this leads to the weaker PRC invading and India going to war or at least aiding the Tibetans by bringing the matter to the UN leading to a stand off between the east and west similar to the Cuban missile crisis eventually the Soviets force the Chinese to back down and a peace agreement is signed recognizing Tibet's independence. So what do you think plausible?

Well, if it's any point after 1900..

1. Have the British Empire and Tibet conclude more contacts, maybe have Tibet become a voluntary protectorate or even join the Raj.

2. Have Tibet manipulate things in the Warlord era to make everyone else weak while reforming and building itself up, this would be hard with a PoD after 1900, but not impossible.

3. Have Tibet be staunchly pro-Nationalist, leading to the N-RoC forcess stationing people or equipment their, have Tibet manage to be able to remain de facto independent as a secondary nationalist fall-back area and the West/the Unted States treats it like it treated Taiwan.

No Indian union.

Mao annexed Tibet mostly out of irredentism, but partly out of fear that if he didn't, Nehru would.

If the British withdrawal from India leaves the subcontinent divided and weak, then the Chinese don't have to worry about anyone marching up to their borders, and an invasion of Tibet may never leave the drawing board.
