Three Wishes

Those are great theories, but in practice women are just as nasty, vindictive, petty, jealous, short sighted and narrow minded as men and therefore just as prone to the sort of disputes which in a position of power would lead to war. These wars may be fought somewhat differently, but I think the horrors would merely manifest themselves in different ways rather than be markedly reduced.

We'd have more shouting matches than bloody wars, but still violent all the same :p

I am going to go against the apparent consensus by wishing that

1. The Gauls had utterly destroyed Rome around 390 BC.

2. If that didn't work, that Hannibal had destroyed Rome.

3. If even that doesn't work, I don't give the much hope for Mithridates even if we had delayed the Cimbri and Teutons to hit at the same time (and speeded up Spartacus). Perhaps I will have to hope that Claudius II and Aurelian are both killed by plague before 269 AD.

Now its no just that I was no good at Latin. I actually think that Rome stopped rapid Greek progress towards modern science. A strong statement of that view is in Lucio Russo's “The Forgotten Revolution: How Science Was Born in 300 BC and Why It Had to Be Reborn”, Berlin, Springer, 2004. Also the longer the Empire lasted, the deeper the eventual collapse because trying to preserve the Empire actually ate wealth.
I was actually going to say pretty much this, and refer to the very same book. You're awesome, sir.
