Three term tradition?

What if George Washington ran for a third term and died after he was president establishing a Three term tradition. Who becomes president in 1800? How many three term presidents do we see? What butterflies does this have on America?

The problem with Washington staying for a third term would be that he could die in office and having the first President of the US dying in office would be setting a really bad precedent.

It's also possible a three-term limit might be established if Thomas Jefferson runs in 1808 and steps down in 1812. I believe that while Washington played with the idea of a two-term tradition, fellow founding father Jefferson only wanting to run for two terms solidified it.

If Washington were to die in this scenario assuming its not butterflied away, there'd be a question on whether or not John Adams would be president in full. I'm not sure if the vice president becoming president in full after their predecessor's death/resignation would be harder or easier to sell ~40 years earlier, though Adams would certainly argue he should be president

and died after he was president

This is assuming his death is butterflied to occur after 1801.

Did you not see where I said this is assuming his death is butterflied to occur after 1801? I applaud you for finding annother potential three term tradition through Jefferson, but this is assuming washington doesnt die in 1799, and dies after he is president. Now, I’d like to know who becomes president in 1800, and what other butterflies this had.

I’m gonna say this again for anyone else who wants to comment...

Hypothetically there was nothing preventing any president pre-Roosevelt from running for three terms. They all stuck to the Washington model out of tradition, and if Washington had run for a third term others might have found it acceptable to do so. However, even an OTL Roosevelt only running for three then stepping aside for health reasons probably prevents Republicans from getting grouchy and pushing for the Twenty Second Amendment.

No two-term limit or tradition-Grant very likely wins third term 1876, maybe even fourth one.TR carries on in 1908, maybe even 1912 and 1916-wins WW1 earlier, dies in office. Vice-president-Hiram Johnson or William Howard Taft.
1960-Eisenhower wins third term -Kennedy doesn't challenge him. 1964-JFK elected over Nixon. 1968-JFK rather than Bobby assassinated. President Johnson already announce stepping down-Nixon wins. 1976-Bobby President. 1980-loses to Reagan. Same until 200-Bill Clinton could have won third term-at least. So,later could Barack Obama.

Maybe somebody later on calls himself ,Dictator' in Roman fashion. Maybe implements the Dictator-Office in the constitution.
