Thousand-Week Reich - A 'realistic' Nazi victory scenario

Original Media
  • Ok, so I've already posted some stuff about this. Thousand-Week Reich, abbreviated to TWR, was a series of maps and other media originally posted on the subreddit r/imaginarymaps with accompanying lore as my attempt to create a timeline in which Nazi Germany wins WW2, but keeping it as realistic as possible and avoiding a Germany-wank. It was also created as a kind of effort to showcase the extent and horrors of the Nazi plans for Europe, like Generalplan Ost, which are relatively unknown even among casual history fans. The series is ongoing, with new additions all the time from me and others, and is even being turned into a HOI4 mod with a slightly modified lore (r/twrmod).

    In basic terms, Germany signs an armistice with Britain in early 1941, wins the war against the USSR at great cost, and continues having to fight a guerrilla insurgency in eastern Europe for years as Britain and America build a close alliance in opposition to them. A civil war breaks out and lasts through the mid-late 1950s, with Nazi Europe crumbling slowly, and direct western intervention being the final death blow.

    An explanation and a collection of all of my (/u/ap246) maps can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AP246/comments/7ch604/the_thousandweek_reich_a_realistic_nazi_victory/ In addition, /u/TheMightyKutKu and /u/aardvark421421 have also contributed with their own maps.

    Here are all the maps and media so far in this series in rough order of creation, click the accompanying reddit links to read their full explanation and accompanying lore (highly encourage you too, there's loads of extra background in the reddit threads):

    Sakhalin
  • Thousand Week Reich - United States Territory of Sakhalin, 1963

    sqbm4fwvwj711.png

    Sakhalin is an island located north of the Japanese Island of Hokkaido, after the intense Russo-Japanese war it was divided between the Russian and later Soviet North Sakhalin at the 50th parallel and the Japanese Karafuto prefecture,
    the island has a harsh and cold climate but has plenty of coal, and Japan brought dozens of thousands of worker, and as many korean forced labour to the island. Japan always eyed the northern half of the island but refrained from doing so after the
    disaster in Khalkhin Gol, however the succesful german invasion of the soviet union would later change their mind, as the Soviet front line in europe was falling apart the japanese army launched a swift attack against the rest of the island, the poorly
    defended Sakhalin oblast fell in three weeks without heavy casualties, Japan continued to bring labor to the island, as the war turned for the worst for Japan the United States decided to launch an invasion of the island, to help the eastern soviet remnant, and
    to have a second base of operation like Okinawa in preparation of a potential invasion of the home islands, however after the nuclear bombings of japan by the United States and the subsequent surrender the US Army never managed to capture the whole island.

    Still the vast ressources of the islands and its ideal location to help the remnant of the Soviet Union in the cold war that was already shaping made the US annex the island, the military government gave the opportunity to the workers to go back to their respective countries,
    and nearly 60% of the 150,000 koreans workers did, finally able to live in a sovereign Korea, but the same wasn't true for the Japanese and the Russian, whose homeland was destroyed by the wars, succesful prospection brought many american investors and as the U.S. built several bases
    over the island its economy boomed, helped by dozens of thousands of Russian and Japanese workers who had lost everything in the wars, as the new Russian Republic, China and Japan stabilized in the 50s the United States shifted their focus from Asia to Europe, the economy of Sakhalin was
    self sufficient, and its population grew by nearly 50% in a little bit more than a decade.

    In 1963, the Reich stands defeated, but the question of the russian successor state is still unsolved, with several states still claiming siberia, and with a more and more aggressive Republic Of China the United States are focusing back to Asia, and in recent years more troups were sent to Sakhalin.
    Meanwhile the inhabitants of the island start to want representations, as the island is still under military occupation, more and more people from the various ethnic groups of the island want a civilian government, and with the recent admission of Alaska to the union, some even harbour desires of statehood

    Discord (for the mod)- https://discord.gg/7Zyc8RM

    The german economic boom after the war was shortlived, partially fuelled by the plunder of dozens of millions, the german economy was always on the verge of collapse, and by 1950 with the incredible military and public spending, the life for millions of german, but before all for hundreds of millions of non-german in europe was getting more and more difficult, the scarce reports from defectors and spies prompted the United States to order in depth reports on the german economy, a few months later the CIA would release a 2,000 pages account that highlighted the extremely dire situation of germany's economy, this map can be found on page 263.

    Compared to the Traditionaly wealthy regions in western germany and Bavaria, the eastern region beyond the elbe suffered a great deal from the Great depression, despite investments in transport and military infrastructure a clear divide in quality of life can be seen even 20 years after the crisis.

    The new eastern region of the Reich, both the General Goverment of Poland and the various Reichskomissariats were the worst hits by the Kleptocratics policies of the Reich, Mass starvation and nearly systematic extermination brought the quality of life in some part of russia to level unseen since the Holodomor, and sometime worse. Despite the large population - more than the reich itself - of the Reichskomissariat, their collective GDP was lower than even that of a single region of germany. And it wasn't the picturesque farms of german settlers that would bring an economic miracle. Eventually large german investments in ukrainian agriculture following the harsh winters of 1945 and 1947 would turn it into a globally productive region, if only due to its sheer scale, and at the cost of millions of deaths. The nearby Administration of the Caucasus would see its economy grow thanks to its vast oil ressources, and Götenland would be the only eastern region with a significant German population.

    Netherland was quickly and fully integrated into the economy of the reich, but the lack of international trade from the Embargo on the German block would hurt it badly, the Reichskomissariat of Belgium, north france and Romandy would become integrated into the reich by the late 40s, its vast mineral ressources and industry would turn it into a globally economically active region, although plagued by popular discontentment and resistance attacks.

    Invasion of Japan
  • Thousand Week Reich - Operation Downfall, the American Invasion of Japan, 1945

    29op9dh4adc11.jpg

    Hello again! I know that this part of the timeline isn't very different from other Operation Downfall stories, but i wanted to show how it happened in TWR

    EDIT: oops, well 1) sorry for the mistake in strenght, and also the "fascist wars" isn't a canon term, forget about it, just consider it as "Pacific war".

    In July 1945 the once great japanese empire was in ruins, four years before it gambled at Pearl Harbor and despite some initial success, the japanese navy and army was gradually pushed back toward the home islands by 1943 the American War Machine was in full strenght, outproducing Japan more than ten times, and a serie of disastrous naval battles in the Phillipines in mid 1944 striped Japan from the bulk of its Navy. But Japan would not surrender yet, as the two battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in december 1944 and February 1945 respectively have proven, and it became clear that the final battle would have to be fought on the home islands. In April 1945 the American High Command asked for a report on the readiness of the Atomic Weapon as some people thought it could force the emperor to surrend, but after learning that it wouldn't be available before late July at best, they decided to start the operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan, which would be helped by nuclear bombs.

    On 25 July 1945 (X-Day), the United States forces consisting of the Sixth Army, supported by the US Third, Fifth, and the Seventeenth Fleets along with the British Pacific Fleet all supported from the air by the US Far East Air Forces, US Strategic Air Forces of the Pacific, the joint Anglo-Canadian Tiger Force, and the Australian First Tactical Air Force commenced Operation Olympic in the invasion of Kyūshū. This force went up against initially the 57th and 40th Armies, part of the Second General Army which consisted also of the 16th Area Army, the 216th Division, supported by the Volunteer Fighting Corps (国民義勇戦闘隊 Kokumin Giyū Sentōtai), supported at sea by 100 Koryu-class midget submarines, 250 Kairyu-class midget submarines, 1,000 Kaiten manned torpedoes, and 800 Shinyo suicide boats, supported in the air by the Sixth Air Army, of which consisted 5,000 aircraft assigned as kamikazes, 5,000 aircraft available for kamikaze service, 7,000 aircraft in need of repair. (The Volunteer Fighting Corps was very poorly equipped, mostly using molotovs, swords, knives, bayonets, polearms, staves, clubs and truncheons, sharpened bamboo and wood, antiquated firearms. Grenades were however very common).

    The invasion was predated by a week of intensive American operations such as a diversionary landing with 2 divisions on the island of Shikoku, intensive bombing of the main communication and transport nodes of Kyūshū and an initial disembarkment on the small island of Shimo-Koshiki, off the coast of Kyūshū.

    A few hours after the initial landings, the first nuclear weapon used in warfare was dropped on Miyakonojō, a city that held the Japanese 25th Division’s headquarters and a railroad junction. The heat of the blast simply tempered the Japanese resolve.

    On 3 August, the second nuclear bomb was dropped, this time on an industrial target - the city of Kokura, to halt the city’s production of munitions, anti-aircraft guns, and beach head fortification materials. Fighting was apocalyptic. Kamikaze attacks, banzai charges, bunkers everywhere, suicidal grenade ambushes followed by a futile charge of swords, knives, and spears of the Volunteer Fighting Corps (KGS) resulting in their slaughter, civilians committing suicide in the name of the emperor. Despite their resolve, the Japanese High command gave the order of a retreat from the coast of southern Kyushu - where they were easy targets for the gunships - toward the mountains and forests, allowing quick advances in early august by the Invading forces, but the Japanese forces would constantly attack the American forces, preventing them from going inland, and inflicting heavy casualties on the defending troops.

    By X+30 (August 24) American casualties were at 68,000 including 5,000 casualties at sea. Japanese casualties were at 195,000, not including civilian and KGS. The Japanese used chemical weapons against the invasion forces to little effect. In retaliation, the Allied forces deployed chemical weapons not only against military forces, but also against rice and corn crops. Using low-flying aircraft and cluster bombs, the affected crops would be utterly destroyed within twelve hours.

    Following the first two bombs, by the end of August a third bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Convinced the United States couldn’t possibly have more, the Japanese kept fighting on. In September the bloody fighting in southern Kyūshū continued. In this time period, the military casualties reached their highest rates. By the end of September, a bomb was dropped every week. The targets were Nagasaki, Niigata, Ōita, and Kumamoto. The Japanese resolve started to become malleable in the heat. In October, four more bombs were dropped on Nagoya, Fukuoka, Tosu, and Yokohama.

    Finally, on October 26, X+93, V-Day the Japanese government surrendered, although not without complications. By X+93, American casualty figures were at 328,000 not including naval and air losses. Japanese losses were at 1.2 million, not including KGS and civilian casualties. Japanese resolve had melted into a steaming puddle. Celebrations broke out all across the United States and the war that had begun on December 7, 1941 was finally over. 45% of American casualties had occured in the last 93 days of the war.

    In Berlin news of the new american bomb shook hitler, whose scientist and engineers asserted that such a weapon was unrealisable with their ressources, the fuhrer would order the immediate restart of the nuclear program, but the shortage of skilled scientist and spy ring in America would make this endeavour much harder than planned, and across the Atlantic the American War Machine was not resting. In both countries it was becoming obvious that the next decades would define not only the future of their nations, but of Mankind as a whole.

    And a link to my new deviantart Gallery

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    But now you may ask, how does it translate into the mod?
    The American Industry received a massive boost from investments during the war, and the nation still remember the war very well.
    , but the generation of soldiers who fought during the war will be phased out, and the baby boom will bring younger citizens who don't remember the war and who won't make the same sacrifices their parents did for their country. As such the bonus from this national spirit will slowly become more powerful, every 5 years or so: in 1955 ; in 1965
    . So it may be a good idea to attack Germany as early as possible during the civil war.
    Thanks to EineKatze ( u/therealeinekatze ) for writing the description and making these national spirits and events!
    Policy of Containment
  • TWR 1 year anniversary special:
    This is a special map. On this day, 5 September, last year, I released the very first map in the Thousand Week Reich series. Back then, i did not intend it to become the great series it is now, nor did i envisage it inspiring a HOI4 mod currently in development with a great community of its own. For me personally, the last year has been pretty mixed, with ups and downs and lots of changes, some welcome, some not, but it's nice to see what this project has become. I want to thank those that contributed to the project, such as /u/TheMightyKutKu , /u/aardvark421421 and /u/ThatGuyFawkes11, all the devs, artists and other contributers currently working on the mod, and everyone who followed along the way.
    Now the map itself. Fairly self-explanatory, I envisage it as an in-universe map, a kind of informational piece created in the US to serve as both an educational document about the situation in the early 50s, as well as a piece of propaganda. Hope you like it!
    And here's my deviantart page: https://www.deviantart.com/thekutku/gallery/
    When Germany launched operation Barbarossa, the Soviet Union scrambled to Evacuate its industry, the colossal undertaking which moved over 50,000 factories and workshop, was met with initial mixed results as it was very disorganised and many factories lacked materials, and it ultimately didn't prevent the defeat of the USSR, but it would have an unexpected side effect years later when all these factories served as the cornerstone of the rump union's industrial capacity.
    In history, few insurgencies were successful without foreign help, and while the Slavic Insurgencies in Nazi Occupied were among the fiercest ever, part of their striking success can be attributed by the large amount of ammunition, medicines, explosives, rifles or clothing that were smuggled from the Soviet Union
    The USSR was in a bad state after being slowly pushed back beyond the Archangelsk Astrakhan line, devoid of a stable leadership, and destabilzed by the flow of millions of refugees, the country struggled to get back on its feets, but thanksfully the germans, already overstretched, exhausted from 3 years of war and lacking fuel, couldn't sustain further pushes. with this partial respite, the USSR managed to, chaotically, reestablishing what the industrial base they had however, lacking quality material, they focused on making low quality materials, that any refugee could produce in factories and that could be useful to the militias and rebels slowly they managed to establish a large scale industry in the urals, setting them apart to the warlord states in siberia
    The guns and explosives they produced were used by their small forces, but lacking organisation they often weren't very effective and the opposing german armies, even as overstretched as they were, managed to hold key point for nearly a decade, although some cities, like Gorky, changed hand several time, however they would be very effective in the hand of partisans. The guns, easily smuggled through the A-A line - in fact more of a vast expanse of sporadic fighting between Germany and various rebels - would allow various rebel group to control vast stretch of lands outside of the Heer's communication and transport axis, and launch raids against the latter.
    The Industries of the USSR, even lacking in quality compared to even german ones during the civil war, gave them a huge advantage, compared to other russian states, and were one of the reasons the union managed to slowly retake most of its former territories during the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s, the support given to various rebels groups in the reichskomissariat also gave them legitimacy and allowed them to influence the groups, so that ukraine and belarus quickly became part of the USSR when they rose against the germans
    So, here's a kind of 'ending' to Thousand Week Reich. The world map in 2018, with every country and every flag. This took quite a while, and guess what, it's *3 years to the day* since I posted my first map on reddit (seriously, go check). Thanks to everyone who followed and everyone who contributed. While this is a kind of end to the narrative, no doubt there will be more TWR maps and media at some point in the future.
    The style is shamelessly stolen from IEPH, so please go see his deviantart page
    So just like yesterday's map this is the result of a "One Hour challenge"... i didn't plan to put the legend in the one hour but i did fail it because i couldn't colour it within an hour, here is what i had done after one hour from starting
    ( i had done nothing before).
    The final product took 2h15 to make, i think i can improve it on the colouring time, although making the description took 30 min by itself...
    This is rather fun, i'll continue making some i think.
    Dalnivostok, officially the Russian Republic, has its origins in the American intervention in the Russian Far East in 1946, the relatively stable American backed authoritarian state would attract a number of Russians, from Children of white emigre to refugee attempting the dangerous crossing of Siberia, many of the far eastern migrants would also come from Finland, whose government wanted to limit the number of Russians.
    The Siberian border of the republic, although fluid and loosely held, was not at a significant risk while central Siberia was occupied by petty warlord state, however this would change when the rump Soviet Union, centered around the ural managed to slowly retake most of its former territories and help insurgencies in German territories. By the second half of the 50s the Russian Republic would be at odds with the Soviet Union, but neither had the power projection capability to make significant gains against the other, this would change during the 60s, as germany finally stood defeated the Soviet Union finally could afford to retake its former territories, the reconquest of Russia, the “otvojovyvanie” would last for several years despite American and British attempt at brokering a peace, it would finally end in 1967 because of american pressure, the border between the two countries would be set at the frontline, giving away claim on sparsely populated areas.
    In return the United states would give away Sakhalin to the Russian republic, a controversial decision as the island had a large Japanese population, and smaller Korean, ainu and even American one, but it was not white enough to be admitted as a state, separatist movements for an independent Sakhalin would shape the young state's policies in the 70s, although a divided and mixed population as well as the gradual democratization of the republic up to the 80s would eventually make the island stay.
    The 80s were a time of growth, the economic boom in the neighboring Korean republic would spill over the Russian republic, renamed Dalnivostok to put emphasis on the separate identity, the discovery of vast resources of oil, gas and minerals would bring large amount of wealth that would enable growth in the industrial sector, quickly vladivostok became the most dynamic city around the sea of japan, with the largest shipyard near it, and the quality of life of Far eastern russian would dramatically improve within a couple decades, the government also gave more representation to the Japanese and Korean in the state, the jewish minority centered after the former autonomous oblast, which was abolished, and english education was promoted.
    Today however the country faces hard challenges, Over reliance on natural resources has led to less investment in infrastructures lately, inequalities are rising and unemployment is growing as other east asian countries are becoming much more competitive, japan having recently surpassed Dalnivostok in gdp per capita, many families of farmers who crossed siberia are alienated by the large growth of the coastal cities, and more and more Chinese worker are allowed to work for a lower price in Dalnivostok, increasing xenophobic sentiments. While relations with russia are variable, there are still a long standing territorial dispute about the kuril island, renounced by japan after its defeat and part of the american sakhalin territory, however the islands were occupied by the former USSR by the 1970s despite Dalnivostokian claims that it was given to them as part of the sakhalin territory.
    China is still the country's largest threat, and while the giant's focus seems to be diverted toward vietnam, the border is still tightly defended despite its lenght. Dalnivostok has one of the largest military spending as a proportion of its gdp in east asia.
    Hello! Some of you might recognise this map, because yes, I did make a version of it before. However, it was littered with mistakes, and I really wanted to go back over it to improve it, fix the errors, and just make it a little better. If you haven't seen it before, it's a 'double blind what if', basically a book set in my 'Thousand Week Reich' timeline about an alternate history where the Soviets defeat the Nazis, instead of the other way round.
    ‘Red Tide’ is an alternate history novel written by Thomas Scott exploring a world in which Nazi Germany was defeated by 1944, losing the Second World War. Banned in Nazi-controlled Europe, it gained great popularity in the west and elsewhere, and despite controversy on its historical plausibility, it is well-regarded as one of the most well-researched and well-written alternate history books ever.
    The novel is split into 3 stories, each at a different point in time following the same protagonist, a Canadian soldier.
    The first takes place in 1944 in eastern France during the closing stages of the war, describing the arrival of large numbers of American troops for the final push as in the First World War, and the protagonist’s horror as news trickles out from the Eastern Front about what would come to be known as the ‘Jewish Genocide’.
    The second story takes place in occupied Germany after the war’s end, describing the effort to suppress Nazi terrorist activities and news of the execution of Adolf Hitler after being tried of crimes against Humanity.
    The third and final story takes place in British Malaya, during the Malayan uprising which still takes place, describing difficult jungle warfare by the forces of the Commonwealth and the Franco-British Union against communist rebels supported by the Soviet Union. It ends with a reflection of the declining power of the west as the news reaches the protagonist that the USSR has detonated its first atomic bomb, something only the United States and the Franco-British Union had so far achieved.
    The lands of Czechoslovakia and Poland were occupied by Germany in 1939, and suffered 20 years of German colonial rule. Ever since Hitler's troops stormed the two countries, Germany had enacted genocidal policies against its conquered neighbours, and this only accelerated with the defeat of the Soviet Union. With both Britain at peace and the USSR completely dissolved, things looked incredibly grim for the people of the west slavic nations. The jewish populations were the first to be killed, with over 99% of them dying by the time of the region's liberation. The next target of the holocaust was the slavs themselves, the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and other smaller groups. Those that could worked were forced into giant slave labour camps and industrial complexes, others that caused trouble went straight to the gas chambers, and others still lived in a wretched state as serfs in rural lands. German colonists immigrated into the new territories as vast tracts of the lands were emptied. Some slavs managed to flee east towards the Russia lines near the Urals, but these were few, and the populations of Poland and Czechoslovakia fell by up to 60%. West Slavic culture underwent systematic extermination - entire city districts full of rich history was demolished and records of slavic history burned.
    However, resistance continued, even as it was pushed ever further underground. With the majority of the German army continuing to fight and unending war in the east against the Russian remnants, second rate soldiers garrisoned the integrated territories. The penalty for supporting a resistance group was of course torture and death, but that didn't stop hundreds of thousands of survivors taking arms against the German occupies, and terrorist attack against German colonists were commonplace.
    When the Greater German Reich began to rapidly collapse in 1954 as it broke into civil war, oppressed peoples seized the chance. Millions of people across eastern Europe rose up, many fighting with knives and improvised weapons or captured German guns. With the majority of the army fighting itself, uprisings saw great success for the most part, with even large cities like Warsaw and Prague being seized by rebel forces. Of course, German reprisals were absolutely brutal with random killings stepped up in an effort to terrify the population back into slavery. The Atlantic Union soon de facto rejoined the war, supporting the slavs and engaging German forces in the west, as Russian forces stormed across the vast, mostly empty lands of the east. When a coalition of military and political leaders in Berlin overthrew the Fuhrer Goering, officially dissolved the Nazi party and declared the German provisional government, it was clear for the successors of the once mighty Reich that the war could not be won, especially with several hundred Anglo-American atomic bombs sitting in Britain, and the new German government was forced to 'negotiate'. This was a surrender in all but name, and the Nazi reign of terror was finally over.
    By this time, Slavic militias had liberated much of their own territory. In the resulting treaties, Poland and Czechoslovakia were revived as states, with concessions in territory to these demographically and culturally ruined nations. Silesia and East Prussia, along with other small pieces of territory, were seized from Germany and the German populations expelled. Surprisingly to those who studied history before the Nazis, relations between the Czechs, Poles, Russians and Ukrainians were very good following the war with a shared experience of fighting off the Germans, while Western-Slavic relations were icy with the slavs feeling betrayed by a US that never joined the war and a UK that signed an armistice in 1941 to save itself and sacrifice mainland Europe.
    Soon after the treaties, Poland and Czechoslovakia agreed to unite into the Union of Zapadoslavia, a west slavic federal union of Poland, Czechia and Slovakia. All 3 of these countries, even Slovakia which had been officially 'free' during the occupation, had suffered immensely, their cultural centres and relics destroyed, their populations slashed and their infrastructure virtually non-existent. This new union was a beginning of slavic unity to rebuild after the nightmare of Nazi rule.
    The capital of the union was Krakow, for a number of reasons. Geographically, it roughly lay in the centre between the 3 nations, but more importantly, it was a centre of resistance during the war and also a region of intense genocide. Some 20 million people had been killed by the Nazis in southern Poland from 1939-1960, and the giant death camps in the regions around the city had seen most of that slaughter. It would forever serve as a reminder of the cruelty that humanity was capable of and the hell on earth that was the Nazi era.
