Thirteen Colonies taxation: How did it work?

So there's been many no American revolution TLs and threads and some about no Townsend acts or Stamp act. My question is, ignoring those acts I mentioned, how did Colonial Taxation normally work? Did the Colonial governments level taxes and some of those were sent to Britain? Or did the British not collect direct taxation? Sorry if this is the wrong section but its something that bugged me.
 
Internal taxes varied from colony to colony as well as over time, but it mostly seems to have been a mix of head taxes, property taxes, and the occassional tax on certain forms of income. I think each colony held onto its own internal tax revenue.

The Crown's revenue from the colonies seems to have been mostly or entirely from duties on trade between the colonies and Britain proper. These duties were often evaded or even actively resisted, so Britain's profit from the colonies mainly came in the form of private gains from trade (some of which could be taxed back in Britain).
