So how would nations in the Third World ge affected by a (nuclear) WWIII in 1983, during the Able Archer exercises? Specifically, how would Africa, the Middle East, and South America be affected?

Im sure there were enough nukes spare for them do get a few, infact I think I read somewhere once that the Soviets had plans to bomb every Western aligned country. South Africa and the pro American Latin American military dictatorships would have undoubtably got bombed. It would be interesting to know if the US had plans to strike the likes of Angola, Ethopia, and Vietnam, Cuba almost goes with out saying.

Angola civil war was still going on, so a nuclear strike could come from the USA or the USSR. Probably would be tactical nuke strikes, not the conventional types we think of as hitting major metro areas. Angola is just screwed, as is any other nation that could be considered a battlefield. Nobody is going to be living in the Korean peninsula for.. well when is the next time we can visit Chernobyl safely...?

Given how much of the third world was dependent upon the US/Canada/Australia for a lot of food, and the negative effects of a nuclear WWIII on climate you'll get massive famines everywhere, the countries that have somewhat decent food production will do better but not great. Also, a great deal of essential machinery at this point in time comes from outside the third world, as stuff breaks down (generating capacity, tractors, etc.) this will make things worse, as a few spots in the southern hemisphere can produce essential machinery/spare parts and they won't be exporting for quite some time. Of course, production of all sorts of medicines (including vitamins) is limited in the southern hemisphere. It's really bad...

Oh, and btw all the oil in the northern hemisphere and Persian Gulf gone - nuked, maybe Indinesia/Borneo as well.
