Third Wife of D. Felipe II of Spain

What about the duc de Montpensier? His sister, AFAIK, was offered for mad James Hamilton of Arran. His other sister was married to Willem I of Orange.

The Montpensier were catholics, the old Duke (Louis III 1513-1582) was one of the most violent leader of the Catholic party beginning in 1560. His wife, Jacqueline de Longwy, was seen as crypto-protestant and two of their daughters married prominent protestant leaders, but they did it with great scandal and without the support of their father. The young Prince-Dauphin (François 1542-1592) was a more moderate kind of catholic, but still a political adversary of the Huguenots. On another side, the Montpensier might be lacking a little in he rank department, being the juniormost princes of the entire french royalty.

Fair enough. Any other suggestions for a possible French, moderate Catholic/crypto-Huguenot husband for Mary, Queen of Scots who's not a decade younger than her then? I know she took issue when the Lords of the Congregation attempted to arrange a marriage for her with a Protestant, but I think that that was more against their presumptiousness (let's face it, if you've been queen practically your whole life and then some old men with big opinions come tell you that you will marry so&so then I think any person in their right royal mind would react like that). So, maybe if the husband is a Frenchman of her choosing, who just happens to be Protestant friendly? What about the de la Marcks? They're related to the Cleves ducal family as well as to the various French and Italian nobility? I think the last duke's son was born around the same time as Mary and was a crypto-Protestant, and was in favor with Henri II.
