Thinking of a scenario

Hi, I'm thinking of writing a scenario and so far I have only one idea. My idea is that Cortez, while moving into Tenochtitlan, decides to declare himself an ambassador of Jesus Christ. He uses the interpretation that Quetzalcoatl is a corruption of Christ and that he, Hernan Cortez, has been sent to convert the Aztecs to the worship of Jesus Christ. Montezuma capitulates and Cortez takes over the Empire. He becomes king of the Aztecs, and when they start to convert to Catholocism en masse, he visits the Pope to be crowned. By paying off the King of Spain with a gift of gold, he prevents war against Spain. Under the stewardship of him and his descendants, the Tenochtitlan (or other name) empire goes on to rule much of America. Can you give me your opinion on this Scenario, or give me ideas for other scenarios?

It's certainly original, but I don't know about plausibility. A European monarch would help with modernization, but they'd still have Old World diseases to contend with.

I'm really not sure I can see the Spanish being happy to accept a bit of gold to let Cortes have full sovereignity of America. Remember this after the Treaty of Tordesillas, when the Pope has essentially told the Spaniards: "everything west of ~45 degrees West is rightfully Spanish territory. God has willed it so." Letting Cortes have his empire represents a frightful loss of prestige, profit, and potential for reaching China (as they still thought they could...somehow).

Sounds interesting but frankly Cortez would have been more interested in making his own empire than converting the Aztecs. Also, the communication systems used by even the advanced Aztecs back then would have been insufficient to rule a significant portion of a continent.
