These Fair Shores: The Commonwealth of New England

Is this a parallel to Chile/Brazil during their dictatorship periods?
Only as much as it is to any other dictatorship.
I wonder what the Olympics of TTL looks like, considering the near cold war circumstances, climate change, Pax Britannica and so forth.

Expect a lot of British teams from all of the Dominions.
Funny that the British should be mentioned, since the Imperial Games is the closest thing this world has to an Olympic Games. Teams from across the British Empire--with player rosters that tend to be more diverse--compete in a multitude of challenges which test both brain and brawn.

Just binged this, this is so cool. As an unironic New York/New England secessionist, this is a very interesting timeline. I'm very happy my apartment is in TTL's New England

Why, if I might ask?

I don't want to support capitalism, the U.S war machine, or Christofascism. I feel the tax dollars of the East Coast could be better spent creating a progressive state and culture if we invest them in ourselves. I recognize my beliefs are fringe and nigh-impossible though

Well, then I don't think you'll be very pleased living in TFS' New England. Although it's a place with generally socially liberal policies, high quality of life and representative government, it is still a part of the British Empire and consequently an arm of British Imperialism. It has just exited a destructive war with the United States where the British government tried to install a puppet government and caused widespread strife and suffering. The Empire until recently was run an oligarchic Board of Trade headquartered in London and also includes the openly racist dominions of Westralia and Avalon, which are still stuck in the "white dominion" mindset of the OTL 1950s. New England, although not part of the United States in TFS is still a member of an imperial project.

And speaking of the United States in ITTL, there is no such thing as the "U.S war machine" or Christofascism in the TTL's US. TFS's USA turns basically every aspect of OTL's USA upside-down. It's a secular, socialist one-party state which had not been at war for almost a century prior to the Third Anglo-American war of 2021, is deeply isolationist and besides a few historical friends, is only allied with fellow international pariahs and socialist states. It has a very friendly native American policy, allowing many tribes self-government and even nominal independence, with only foreign and military affairs handled by Cincinnati.

In short, if you aren't really a fan of capitalism or imperialism, you opinions on New England and the USA might be reversed in TFS.

The alt-US is quite authoritarian, however - even more so than the actual US at the height of Cold War paranoia. Whether capitalist or socialist, there don't seem to be many countries in this timeline that would be considered free, by our own standards; even those states that are democratic and transparent seem to have a bit of a paternalistic bent to them, as if imperialism slowly morphed into nanny state-ism while shedding (most of) its racist baggage.

I don't want to support capitalism

Unlikely that New England would be anything but Capitalist given it’s kind of a major centre of US capitalism, even if a notable chunk of its inhabitants are social democrats. Especially if you include NYC which is arguably the centre of global capitalism.

the U.S war machine

Fair & I’d even argue quite based.

or Christofascism.

While I wouldn’t necessarily go so far as call the mainstream US Christian right fascist yet (as the descendant of victims of a genocide by a Catholic Fascist regime, I think I might have some insight i to this), I would definitely say it’s reasonable to expect an independent NE to be more secular so, makes sense.

I feel the tax dollars of the East Coast could be better spent creating a progressive state and culture if we invest them in ourselves.

Probably yeah.

I recognize my beliefs are fringe and nigh-impossible though

Certainly.

Not sure how happy you’d be with TFS’ New England given your ideological leanings but it’s certainly an amazingly made and interesting TL.

Quick little side note, if any of you were to be in this universe, what country do you want to live in? Personally I would want to live in Aotearoa or Canada.

Ngl I’m not caught up enough with the lore & am probably conflating bits of other TLs but Russia seems ok.

Shame to see my homeland is just as wartorn ITTL as IOTL, though (East) Herzegovina being united with Montenegro is lowkey its most organic faith lmao.

So, there was no Olimpic Games in our sence TTL?
And what about Sokol Movement? I can imagime Sokol Games as TTL "Slavic Olympics", and Russian Imperial Games analogue.
Unfortunately, no. Sports in general are quite fractured.
There certainly are ambitions for both Pan-Slavic games and for European games in general, although neither currently exists from what I understand.

As the Jewish developer of the TL, I am genuinely happy to see the author of another timeline with Jews at the forefront enjoy These Fair Shores
