Theoretical Jeffersonian States Government

How do you think an American government would function if states were divided as Jefferson planned? Would it be any different?

For reference, here is my interpretation of it.

Why are there two Washington's?

This also doesnt seem to be very Jeffersonian to me, he was very much for states rights, this seems to have defeated that

Also why is there a Prince Edward Island?

This is a cool map Highlander. I know the date on the map is 1899, but if the POD that made this map "reality" is pre-1800 then P.E.I. should be St. John Island.

At any rate, both the House and the Senate would be larger for one thing.

CURVE THE BORDERS!

;_;

They are gently curved, but at this magnification on this part of the world, it doesn't really matter.

Besides, tell me, of all people, to curve borders? One of the Great Legends? :p;)

I believe the PoD would be post 1800, possibly, even if only a bit.

I imagine it would be a one vote per state rule.

I'm so thankful Jefferson was never able to do this. My eyes already bleed from the borders of modern Europe..

Hate to see the thread die since you clearly put some thought and talent into creating the map. I've got to say, tho, that I do miss the crazy name Jefferson came up with.

Differences between states' populations could be even worse than in OTL, perhaps leading to earlier and more complaining about every state getting two senators and the electoral college.

I didn't count, but it seems like the South would be in a much stronger position against the North in the Senate than OTL.

And why don't they have the West?

Ugh. Attack of the sparsely populated mini states! The population imbalances, already too great for the US political system IOTL, would be even worse...

This would over-enfranchise the people on the east coast, no?
The exact contrary would happen.

I don't think that Jefferson or most others would approve of a plan that split up the territory of existing states like New York and Virginia. Also, Maine was probably too sparsely populated to seriously consider splitting it into 2 states, and Florida would be split into a maximum of 2 states, not 3, since it was also pretty sparsely populated.

What would get New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to become part of the USA?

A lot of the other boundaries are fairly plausible.

I would consider that a possible POD would be the Revolutionary War, or even before. That would explain the incorporation of the Iroquois nation/state. Tuskegee could be renamed Cherokee - unless they have been forced into Indiana. I would try to incorporate the state of Franklin, probably where Greene is. Iowa and Missouri appear to share a bizarre border that makes them equal in size, but I think it would be easier just to adopt a parallel latitude as a border.

This was actually pretty much a throw-a-way one, but thanks for the compliment. :)

What this does remind me of, and what I spend a little time reviewing yesterday, was the graphic novel Arrowsmith by Busiek & Pacheco. There the United States of Columbia only extends as far as the Missisippi River and state borders of the original 13 run westward to it.

Huh, that's sounds really neat; is the graphic novel good?

Its an interesting AH graphic novel. There is magic present in the world, which is fighting the Great War. Frankly I would have paid just for the alternate maps of Europe and the New World. It came out in 2004 and it appears likely that there will be no follow up Book 2.
