Who, in place of Secretary of War Taft, would be the most likely to be chosen by T.R. to run for President in 1908?

T.R. himself. :D

Most likely. Roosevelt loved the Presidency, and it's entirely plausible that he would have served until his death if he had taken a third term.

It might be better to ask who goes up against him in '12 if he wins in '08.

EDIT: By the way, this is over 100 years ago. That blows my mind.

Iirc, TR was quoted as saying that if he had the powers of a dictator, he would make Root President and Taft Chief Justice.

That seems to imply that Root was impossible for some reason. Anyone know why?

No; I think he might've been too pro-business for Roosevelt...

This would be the problem for a number of potential Republican candidates, Roosevelt was walking a fine line those years, not the out-and-out Progressive he'd be in '12 yet, but definitely not a fan of the big business boys.

A great turn of it would be Charles Bonaparte as POTUS :D
