The world that Eleanor Roosevelt made...

Well, here it is: my first time line. Comments are encouraged. And needed. Rather desperately. But Here. We. Go.

UN imposes No-Fly Zone over Arab Islamic Republic. Soviet veto overridden by non-permanent members. The Independent, the 5th of March, 2011.

GOTCHA!: OUR BRAVE NAVAL AVIATORS SMASH ARGIE CARRIER The Sun, the 4th of May, 1982.

''My fellow Americans. It is with great happiness that I tell you right now that I have just spoken with are Astronauts on Mars. They are perfectly safe, and expect to start exploring shortly''. Extract from President Reagan's speech in the event of a successful Mars landing. Taken from from To the Moon, Mars and beyond by noted popular scientist, Harry Turtledove, Baen Books, 2003.

So, what do you think?

Well, the 1st POD is that their is a small change to the structure of the UN at its foundation, as well as another small change in it's charter. Things from that point on will be told in a series of ALT newspaper articles, book extracts and such and such.

And here is the 1st POD:

Article One of the UN Charter:

To maintain international peace and security, to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace. Furthermore, to prevent the repetition of the disaster that befell the world between 1939 and 1945, the United Nations is required by this Charter to intervene to prevent large-scale loss of life in both international and internal disputes.

Article 27:

Decisions of the Security Council on all other matters shall be made by an affirmative vote of nine members including the concurring votes of the permanent members; provided that, in decisions under Chapter VI, and under paragraph 3 of Article 52, a party to a dispute shall abstain from voting. In the event of a security council member vetoing a decision, the non-permanent members of the council shall vote on either confirming or overriding said veto. Only in the event of preventing an internal or international humanitarian disaster can action be taken without a vote.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a visionary, a woman dedicated to the highest ideals of humanity. It is through her efforts that... Vice-President John F. Kennedy, speaking at Eleanor Roosevelt's funeral, after her death on the 8th of May, 1962.

Comments, as always, are encouraged.

Well, that's the start of it. The idea was that Eleanor Roosevelt managed to slightly change the UN Charter so that preventing genocide is a no-veto thing the UN has to do. It can't stand by. What it can't do is prevent things like the Hungarian Uprising being crushed, but that issue is also slightly different ITTL. Their is also the veto-override, which was put in their to prevent, for example, the Soviets blocking something. Or the US for that matter.

You might have noticed some other changes as well. Like what Reagan's speak was about, or rather, what it would have been about.

Okay guys, I've got a game for you. Based on what I've written so far, tell me what you know is different about TTL from OTL.
P.S. Spread the word! My ego can't boost itself, you know?

Yes, we (meaning you, the USA) gets a Mars mission. What happens on that mission though....

And google the Arab Islamic Republic. It's not the Caliphate.

Thanks for the comments ABC. The idea was to make preventing genocide and things like it alot easier. Not only that, but the reasons various countries joined it still apply. (I needed a POD anyway). If you think it needs moving to the ASB so be it, put i'd rather that not be so. Anyway, I'm on a roll tonight so here we go again on our own...

Lyndon Baines Johnson relected as President of the United States New York Times, 5th of November, 1964.

The 1964 general election is marked as being one of the most interesting elections in US political history. Four different parties decided to run. the Progressive ticket being LBJ/Richard Nixon, the Democrats running former vice-President John F Kennedy/Dean Rusk, the Republicans running Spiro Agnew/Ronald Reagan and the American Independence Party George Wallace/Thomas S. Powers. The popularity of Johnson and the Great society saw to it that he won handsomely, setting the scene for American politics for the next 36 years.

The intervention-orientated UN does play a major part of it. The fact that neither the USA or the USSR has as much interest in screwing over the 3rd World helps as well. Kruschev is going to be remembered as a great man ITTL, for reasons that shall become clear.

No, we actually may not have a UN at all.
Wich great power would want to be a part of such organisation?

Yeah... at first glance it seems like a strong force for good but than look at history and well...

A lot of people would still use it for power politics and keeping their puppet states in line. If the Soviet Union decides one of its proxies is getting uppity, they send in the troops citing a humanitarian intervention...

This sounds more like a dystopia version of the UN the more I think about it.
