The world of “Prince of Peace” 700 years later -
I’m referring here to Faeelin’s “Prince of Peace” scenario which diverges at the time of the Hohenstaufen Emperors of the HRE, not the Iberian “Prince of Peace” scenario.
As of the last installment of Prince of Peace taking place around 1270 AD, here was the world situation as I recall it:
In Europe, the Hohenstaufen’s were running a strongly centralized HRE controlling all of Italy and Germany. Earlier in the scenario, for at least temporary spells, they had ruled England and France, but not by the end I believe.
However, another branch of Staufen’s were running a comparatively successful (Latin) Byzantine Empire in the east. It may have extended its frontiers down to Syria.
In the eastern Mediterranean, the Crusaders kicked butt, ruling Egypt and Palestine at this time.
Meanwhile, Islamic Andalusia had just discovered Cuba, and it was said that Islamic preaching would reach throughout the new continents as far as the Dakotas.
Europe east of the HRE was then ruled by the Mongols.
So, this scenario gives us a world with some larger, more centralized European states and victorious Crusades as of 1270 AD. And it gives an early discovery of the Americas, albeit by Muslims.
Fast forward 700 years, to 1970, how do we think this world compares to OTL’s 1970 in the following dimensions:
1: technology level --- are they higher or lower tech than OTL, and why do you think?
2: Global dominance of European states or at least states based on European settlement or institutions, is this greater than OTL, or lesser, with more multi-regionalism and Afro-Asian worlds held their own?
3. Where does the PoP European world sit on the continuum of political fragmentation versus political unity- Europe is more united or less united than OTL?
4. Where does the PoP world sit on the continuum of despotism versus democracy – is it a less democratic or more democratic world than OTL?
5. Where does it sit on the continuum of low regard for individual rights/liberties versus high regard for individual rights and liberties? Does PoP have a better “human rights record” than OTL?
