The wilderness

Well we were going in history class about the civil war and I was wondering guys the wilderness campaign was the south's last true defence against the north. So how can we make the Wilderness campaign either more costly or have the south eventualy win this campaign.

It's impossible. Lee actually did win a fair share of these engagements, and virtually all of them had higher death tolls for the North. What really made them different from previous battles was Grant just kept coming. He understood that the North could afford it while the South... couldn't. By the time of the Wilderness Campaign there was no way for them to end successfully for the South.

If Longstreet had not been disabled by friendly fire at a critical AND if Early had allowed Gordon to make his attack on the Union right flank when he had first suggested such a move, it's entirely possible that Lee could have achieved a decisive victory against Grant in the Wilderness, rather than the limited tactical victory he achieved IOTL.
