Hi, this is my first AH here, and I hope you like it. I was tired of seeing alternate histories in books and movies (Haven't read here in ages, so I can't say about here) that depicted the confederate victory as a horrid affair, with slavery until present day and the KKK in office or some such thing like that.
So I've thought about what it would be like, but first I needed a PoD. I decided that in the 1830's, the Native Americans in the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) revolt, and with the help of plains Indians and some (lots) guns from Mexico, they win the war and leave the American forces in shambles. However, due to a muddy spring disease is rampant in the camps which also leads to a loss of forces due to death and desertion.
The majority of the forces killed were northerners, which in turn leads to the belief that the southerners purposefully left many soldiers home to humiliate the northerners. With tensions rising on both sides, conflict was inevitable. Everything spilled over in 1861 when Abraham Lincoln, a republican and abolitionist, was elected. With the final straw, the confederate states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee seceded from the union and declared itself independent of Northern Tyranny, which was laid out in the Proclamation of Independence.
The North, angered by this move, quickly sent the federal army through to Virginia, with the help of Western Virginia, a secessionist state to the secessionist state. Richmond was taken easily, but a noble resistance formed in the city, and the unionists were soon beaten out of the city, back across the border.
Battle after battle, each side winning some ground in the morning, then losing it all and more by evening. The war raged on as a stalemate, until confederate spies found plans by Lincoln himself to write a proclamation that, in effect, freed slaves. This scared the Confederate Congress, which feared that such proclamation would bring about slave revolts would run rampant after such a document.
In order to halt such destructive events from happening, a preemptive plan that "Freed" any slave that would fight under the Confederate flag and all his family, putting them into an indenture-ship program that would last a few years and ensure that proper payment would be due. The Indenture-ship Proclamation was quickly ratified and as soon as it was in effect, tens of thousands of black boys and men took up arms and fought for the bars and stars.
Even with this help, however, the union army attacked and crushed any resistance left in Richmond that was left from the beginning of the war. In desperation, Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants formed a plan to focus all troops to Richmond, and push all the way through to Washington, D.C. This plan, known as Lee's Gamble, proved to be the tie-breaker and game-winner for the war.
The Confederate Army amassed at Richmond, crushed the Union army there, and began marching up through Maryland and was almost five miles outside the capitol before the truce papers were delivered to Lee. The Gamble had worked, and a new nation was formed.
The truce stated that all states that seceded from the union were to be henceforth known as the Confederate States of America, and that the State of Virginia would be parted along the James River, with the Northern half of the state merging with Western Virgina and renamed Northern Virgina, while Southern Virginia was to remain a Confederate state. Likewise Richmond was to be divided in half, with a North Richmond and a Southern Richmond.
After the War, both new nations crafted many treaties and trade agreements, which allowed southerners to sell their crops to the north in exchange for northern machinery and textiles. Soon, both nations came to become bountiful trading partners.
However, with the Rise of the Confederacy, many other territories out west decided to secede as well. The Montana, Idaho, and Colorado territories became independent republics, while Utah and parts of Southern Nevada became the State of Deseret. The rest of Nevada, along with California, Washington and Oregon became the Republic of California. The Arizona and New Mexico territories became the New Mexico Republic. And the nation that started it all, the former Indian territory (Now known as Sequoyah) consists of what would be in the OT as Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and the Dakotas.
That's All I have for now (Alot, ain't it?), But also I'm thinking that the south gets rid of Indentured-ship during the 1900's when farming equipment replaces most manual labour completely.
