The War of 1852, otherwise known as the Oregon War

I know there have been other threads on this, but let me elaborate on this scenario that is taking place in my timeline known as Sidney. Here are a few things to know about the universe as it stands.

- In 1839, Sam Houston dies in Texas. Nationalists seize power.
- In 1841, President William Henry Harrison never dies, Tyler never takes office. He passes a higher tariff, a third bank.
- Thanks to the US tariff, Texas benefits from higher trade with Britain and France.
- In 1844, the Mormons reach Utah, two years before OTL, with a membership 2.5x the size.
- In the election of 1844, Henry Clay faces Martin Van Buren. Henry Clay wins. No Mexican American War. Clay continues his American System policies, makes slight concessions to the South, and arranges new funding for colonizing Liberia.
- In 1846, Mormon colonist James Strang founds New Jamestown in Idaho, leading the Mormons to colonize the Snake River Valley.
- In 1846, Mormon colonist Sam Brannan leads Mormon pioneers to California.
- In the election of 1848, the Free Soil Party splits the Democratic vote enough to allow Henry Clay to take another term, with Millard Fillmore as his VP. His platform largely succeeds because he promises to make headway on the Oregon issue (unsolved because there was no Polk).
- In 1848, gold still hasn't been discovered in California.
- In 1848, James Strang establishes relations with the British.
- The Revolutions of 1848 are much more violent and last longer, but achieves the same revolt. The exodus to America because of this is a degree larger.
- Palmerstone became the British Foreign Secretary in 1846, and in 1849 he decides he will not take anything north of the Columbia River line in Oregon, leading old, compromise-loving Henry Clay to flounder on the subject.
- In 1850, Henry Clay dies, and Millard Fillmore becomes POTUS.
- In August 1850, Congress notifies the British that in one year they will terminate their contract. But they can't come to a settlement.
- 1851, Fillmore still can't get a deal with the British by the time one year has passed. They decide to freeze the termination, and agree on international arbitration. Both begin looking for a neutral third party.
- In 1851, President Comonforte abandons Mexico City, leading Mexico to erupt in a civil war between liberal and conservative factions.
- In 1851, Brigham Young and John Sutter begin a joint rebellion against the Mexican government, proclaiming the Republic of Deseret all the way down to the latitude of 30 degree.

- January, 1852, neither the United States nor the British Empire can agree on a third party and come into extreme conflict with each other. By this time, people are painting newspapers with headlines for war.
- February, 1852, Prime Minister John Russell declares the boundary along the 49th parallel and south of the Columbia River, daring the Americans to due something.
- March, 1852, President Millard Fillmore declares in his annual address to the Congress that he believes they can beat the British to the 49th at least by the end of his term.

Hostilities begin in Oregon.

The Americans are pioneers. They have skills with rifles, bowie knives, and hunting. They are also much more plentiful.

However, the British have naval support in the area, and supply lines from the ocean. They control all fifteen forts in Oregon country. They have many allegiances with Indian tribes that they've been building for a much longer time period than the Americans. The Indians also hold a grudge against the Americans.

The Mormons populate the southern Oregon country. Fanatical and ambitious James Strang is their de facto leader, Brigham Young does not worry about the membership in Oregon. They are particularily strong in the Snake River Valley, where Americans enter Oregon through the Oregon trail. They have formed bonds with the British, and in the event of a war would become a firm ally, as long as they could gain territory after the war's end.

I'll paint details about further escalation later, but I'd like some ideas on what might happen.

America is going down.

The only hope for the US is that Russia somehow comes up with an excuse to invade the Ottomans in a Crimean War analogue drawing British interest elsewhere but still...The sheer gulf in scale between the US and Britain is enourmous.
The US is a agrarian republic trying to fight a industrial powerhouse head on.
