The Victory of Villars

Marshal Villars, the leading French Commander was tasked to take Vienna and take the Austrian Empire out of the War of Spanish Succession, and unravel the Grand Alliance against Spain, France and Bavaria. These plans were put in Jepordy when the Elector of Bavaria, Maxamillian, had a falling out with Villars, seeking for him to be replaced with Marshal Duc de Tallard, a less dynamic commander. However, Louis XIV insisted Marshal Villars would remain in command, he wanted to be assured fo Vienna's fall. Maxamillian was displeased with this, but agreed to work with Villars. The French-Bavarian Army marched along the upper Danube on the way to Vienna. However, Marshal Villars did not expect a massive allied force under the British Duke of Marlbourough to attempt to intercept him. Outside the small town of Blenhiem, Marlbourough and Villars drew up battle lines. The fate of the Austrian Empire and that of the World would be decided there.

Wow, this is a coincidence. I was just thinking about this last night - as far as I know, the only time Marlborough and Villars actually faced each other in a real battle (as opposed to skirmishing and attempting to outmanoeuvre each other) was at Malplaquet, where Marlborough had greater numbers and eventually achieved a pyrrhic victory. However, it's the French who had numerical superiority at Blenheim, so perhaps Villars could actually reverse the historical outcome here.

The Result of this battle could be very different with Villars in command.

Without him the French lost, with him, who knows?
It is often said Vienna was saved because of Villars and Maximillians argument

So, a decisive battle already in 1704... If Villars defeats both Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy, it will be the triumph of the Sun King in the WSS and the entire world history will be butterflied. :D

The world will be radically different, it should be noted theres a chanace for a united Spanish-French Kingdom . If Phillip V is allowed to keep his claims to both thrones.

All I can say is that you've made one of the most interesting "Who would win?" situations - though Villars and Marlborough would face at Malplaquet, the latter only won at points to the point where Villars told Louis XIV that another Malplaquet would defeat the Allied war effort.

A victory by Villars at Blenheim would mean the Churchills won't have a house of the same name... ;) Not to mention that Britain is screwed.
