The Vasa Czarina

Whether this is BS or no, I haven't a clue, but wikipedia says that Ivan the Terrible and Erik XIV were actually in talks to marry Ivan's son Ivan Ivanovich to Erik's bastard daughter, Virginia.

Mind though, at the time this horse-dealing was going on, Virginia was still in the single-digits agewise.

But say for shit and giggles if nothing else, Ivan Ivanovich gets Virginia Eriksdotter (who'll probably change her name) as a wife. With his daughter as the future Russian czarina, can Erik keep his crown longer? And at the risk of offending Sweden, Ivan can't play the divorce card like he did with his first two daughters-in-law.

Or is this alliance between two crazy kings doomed to failure? All I can say about the little Ivanovich running around, is that the mad kings in Game of Thrones might have competition.

There is only a 5 years difference, Ivan was born in 1554, while virginia was born in 1559, so in 1566, they are 12 and 7, not an out ragious age to marry when you look at what the rest of Europe was doing.

In OTL, neither had children, but if they marry in 1571, when Virginia is 12 and Ivan is 17, then that should be fine, with their first child coming around 1573-77, this gives Tsar Ivan a grandchild and heir.

But all this reliese on Tsar Ivan, behaving himself, for as his son stated in 1581:
You sent my first wife to a convent for no reason,
you did the same with my second,
and now you strike the third,
causing the death of the son she holds in her womb.
If Ivan is this terrible in TTL, we might just see the same effects happen. While, Erik XIV, keeping his throne, depends on if he can have Russia as an ally and if his illegitamet daughter is able to keep a close tie to the two nations.

True. Could have interesting effects on Erik's reign in Sweden. Wonder if the ripples will spread outwards from there. Especially when one thinks that Erik's legitimate son was betrothed to the daughter of another Russian emperor.

After reading up a bit on the Time of Troubles, I've come across the fact that there were a slew of famines/agricultural problems during those years. Obviously the personage of Ivan's wife isn't going to have continuing ripples to the environment, but I was wondering how/what might happen with a more politically stable Russia, if said famines etc still occur?

The problem with this is what Is Ivan the Terrible going to do, if this helps prevent a rift from growing between the two, then the incident where Ivan accidentally kills him may be butterflied away. The problem is what can you do to make Ivan the Terrible a bit less terrible, because even Ivan Ivanovich becomes Ivan V sure you've averted the time of troubles, but alot of the negative impacts of Ivan's reign still remain.

However doing some cursory wikipedia reading, an betrothal could very well prevent Swedish intervention in Livonia and make for much more lasting Russian successes in the Livonian War. In fact you could very well butterfly things like the Oprichnina system and the sacking of Novgorod by Ivan the terrible at this stage, which could lead to a even more stable Russia but no Romanovs

I've had some idea about a Russia timeline or 2, I think I may want to use this a POD if it's alright with you?
