The US Buys Greenland

Following the US making Greenland a effective protectorate during the events of World War Two, the US government attempted to buy Greenland from the Danish Government for 100Million. I wonder if say the Danish government was strapped for cash (Say the Germans did abit more extensive damage to Denmark then OTL) what would happen toward the administration and use of Greenland by the United States?

Well, is there any oil under Greenland? I see it first being an outpost for watching Soviet action in the Cold War and then either taking the place of or replacing the need for the ANWR issue in relation to added land for oil drilling.

Don't know about eventual statehood, but being as large as it is, I can't see the U.S. leaving it as a territory for very long. I'm sure they could scrounge up enough people to hit the population limit.

Big, but thinly populated. Even today it only has ~56,000 people living there, about half as many as the Virgin Islands. Because of that, and because the people that do live there are mainly not white English-speakers, I suspect it will end up being a Commonwealth or Territory, like Guam or the Virgin Islands (that has benefits for the inhabitants, too, since they don't have to pay federal taxes if Wikipedia is to be trusted). It does apparently have some valuable mineral resources, but at first its main value will be strategic. It anchors one end of the GIUK gap controlling Soviet naval access to the Atlantic Ocean, and is a good location for missile-watch and bomber bases. In fact, IOTL there was a major US base at Thule for just that purpose, with bombers specially modified to work in the cold. Obviously the same or more will happen if the island is US-owned.

Would also create an interesting dynamic in the current climate change debate. Not only would the USA have its OTL reasons (automobile dependence, big oil, etc) to drag its feet on greenhouse gas standards, it would possess this huge territory just waiting to be settled and developed if the ice sheets would only melt.
