The Underground Railroad but in Eastern Africa

This post interested and made me think - what if the scenario that was originally posted in this thread had come along and an "Underground Railroad" had developed for Egyptian Copts to flee to Ethiopia? What might the effects of such a thing be on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa in general?
There would be more of a language barrier than in USA. Aswell as there would be less food and shelter. These factors would make the trip more difficult than in USA.

True - what would be needed for this to work in the first place? Closer connections between Ethiopia and Egypt?

The destination needs to be desired more than the origin.
There has to be people who are willing to let Christians pass, and preferably help them too. People could be motivated to help by sympathy or financial incentives.
An Aksum that not only manages to survive but flourish after being pushed into the Ethiopian interior could take note of the oppression that the Egyptian Copts are suffering and attempt to smuggle them into the Ethiopian Highlands via Nubia (a Nubia that remains Christian could definitely help with this). The same could occur with a Zagwe-ruled Ethiopia that is much more militaristic and expansionist than IOTL.
