The Two Frances

What if some how after the beginning of the French revolution the country split into two different countries, one royalist, one republican, were would the geographic division be?

The thing is, there was no clear line of division. Certain regions were more inclined to resist the Republic and support the monarchy, but it wasn't one specific part of France. This map, for instance, gives an indication:

The revolts in the Vendée and in the Bretagne were staunchly monarchist, but in many places, resistance to the government in Paris was also caused by the policies of radical centralsation. See this map, for instance:

(But do keep in mind that many areas marked with "federalist uprising" also harboured monarchists.)

After 1848 you could have a group (be it Republicans, Fascists, Monarchists, whoever) take over mainland France, but have the current government (who maintains the loyalty of the navy) flee to Algeria.

Algeria after that point was considered part of metropolitan France, and had a decent number of French colonists and other Europeans living there.

the actual Frenchmen were still grossly outnumbered so you might have a south Africa type situation developing in that case.

A stalemate (in term of years, not necessarily permanent) after the armistice of WW2 between the allied and axis could lead to distrust between Germany and Vichy which was mistrusted at best. To counter the crypto-fascism of Petain, they install a puppet state covering the occupied headed by the PPF. With time, North France becomes a full blown axis ally and South France is courted by the allies but plays a thightrope game between isolation from the conflict and secretly trying to rearm.
