The Trial of the Decade (1990s)

April 19th 1993

As fire rages through the Branch Davidians compound of Mount Carmel eight men and three women struggle through the gas, smoke and flame and escape through one of the punched holes in the buildings exterior led by their leader David Koresh. After escaping the fire Koresh is quickly arrested by the massed Federal authorities.

What if David Koresh survived the fire? How would a Criminal prosecution go again Koresh? Would more be known about Federal operations in the assault and siege today? Would it be the trial of the 90s? Or would such trials as the Rodney King LAPD trial and OJ Simpson trial take that mantle?

The trial of a legendary football player for murdering his wife is gonna easily top the trial of a braindead cult leader. The only reason Waco got the attention it did was because of the massive battle that ensued, and the devout conviction amongst the right-wing nutters in America that Koresh and a bunch of innocents were murdered by the ATF and FBI.

The Rodney King trial only got attention because the beating got filmed and the cops originally got off, acquitted by a all-white jury. Boo goes Los Angeles, and everyone then takes notice. Ice Cube said it well on May 5, 1992, when he commented "if we had marched it would have gotten 30 seconds of press. But we rioted, and people paid attention for five days, and the cops got charged and went to jail."

All-white?

"The jury consisted of Ventura County residents — ten whites, one Latino and one Asian. The prosecutor, Terry White, was African-American."

Yes it had a large majority of white citizens, but was not all white.

Well, personally I'm of the opinion that the US authorities wanted him and his children dead, so I don't see them letting them escape, but maybe I'm just paranoid !

You’re not the only one!

I watched a documentary on Waco recently and it definably seemed to me that the ATF wanted Blood. They needed a high profile raid, which would keep them in the publics and politicians eyes. They could have taken Koresh in the town away from the children and any weapons however they wanted to get in the news and storm the building.

Would any Branch Davidians be guilty of the deaths of ATF agents or would it be similar to the Randy Weaver Trial where he was not found guilty of murder?
