the Third Bourbon Restoration

how would France be changed if after the fall of the Second French Empire, Henri, comte de Chambord was made Henry V King and the Third Republic never was? would Henry have lasted as king? and would there be a monarchy in France to this day?

Henri had no heirs and was too old produce one by the 1870s. Furthermore, (IIRC) his support was in the hopes that he would be too weak to make any changes to the republican system. But Henri was probably a reactionary (he refused to change the flag even when it cost him his kingdom), so would try to increase royal power at the expense of the people. He would then find his support dwindling, and upon death I imagine that France would revert back to a republic.

his heir was Philippe, comte de Paris, the Orléans claimant, thats how he's got the Orléans on board, most of France wanted Philippe (a liberal) but needed the Legitimists on board so the crown was offered to Henri hoping he'd die soon, he wouldn't take it because of the flag, so the the republic was formed to hold over till he dies, it took him 13 years to die and people had come to like republic, so Philippe got fucked

Had Chambord accepted the Tricolour as the French flag he would have been restored to the throne. In 1883, after his death, the Count of Paris, would have acceded to the throne. The Orléans family liberal nature would have let the parliamentary monarchy consolidate in France. The Kingdom of France would have remained a monarchy maybe until German invasion in 1940. The success of the monarchy to stay would depend on the support of the monarchy to the Pétain régime. If they support it - as the House of Savoy did - they would have to face defeat in a referendum. If they resist, maybe exiling themselves in Canada (Québec?) the monarchy would stay. Also there is the possibility for the monarch in turn to abdicate to a cadet member of the branch to succeed in their will to preserve monarchy.

PS. By the way, this parliamentary monarchy would represent a break (as it contraposes the Fundamental Laws of the Kingdom who had lasted almost one thousand years) and a continuity (it keeps the purest form of government). According to the Fundamental Laws of the Kingdom of France, the throne corresponds naturally to the eldest male descendant of Huge Capet, first king of France. Therefore the legitimate heir to the throne of France would had been a Bourbon prince, descended from Phillip V, who renounce to the throne of France after the War of Spanish Sucession, clearly violating the Fundamental Laws of the Kingdom. A true king cannot renounce his rights to the legitimate throne to whom he is called by God and his people.

A surviving French monarchy could have great effects on WWII (possibly butterflying it away, but lets not get into that). A French King could say screw the Germans we shall fight on and order the bulk of his military to Algeria. I have my doubts Petain would support the Orleanists and might look to the legitimists to take the vacant throne, as they were more conservative in nature.

Two French Monarchies, the Collaborator Legitimists Bourbon's and the Free Orleanists. This could have a big effect on Charles de Gaulle and his role in the Free French movement as people would look to the Free King and not to de Gaulle for hope.

1) Pétain would never have summoned the legitimate heir to the French throne. If the Orleanist branch flees and does not cooperate, he would have better abolished the monarchy and concentrate power into his government.
2)The House of Bourbon would never consider such vulgar proposal from a colaborationist government at the behest of their people and her dignity. Of course, they would fight their natural right to rule from the Orleanist usurpers but in any case they would do it treacherously.

What I think could be interesting is that the French people would look towards their Crown as the symbol of the resistance against the collaborationists instead of Général de Gaulle.
